Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 22May 26, 2009 1:05 pm Thanks everyone for all your suggestions - much appreciated! Fu, your suggestion about putting cluster of plants around the tree base is a great idea! DH love it! Yes, Macy, tha'ts our gas meter in the garden bed. Hate it.. it was supposed to be a feature (the pergola), but the gas distributor doesn't have a choice but to put the gas meter there, as we have openable windows around that side. Will just cover it with plants (not prickly ) Looks like Manchurian Pear is the best tree to plant in our garden (as per Fu and lacebark)... our landscaper would be happy to hear it (as it is cheaper than the Japanese maple ). I still love the Cercis Forest Pansy, but might plant it in the backyard instead. I will do my final research of the plants that you suggested... so I can give the list to the lanscaper by tomorrow. Thanks again everyone! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 23May 26, 2009 4:21 pm VJ, your garden looks great even with the turf and mulch! Always loved your facade I'm going through the same process as you at the moment. I've narrowed down the plants and now just need to work out how many we'll need. Manchurian Pear will look lovely in your yard (I've googled every plant and tree from the list that our landscaper sent me ). We've decided in Claret Ash so hoping that they will be okay. Look forward to seeing your next lot of photos with the plants in! I think lacebark just wet herself with joy reading that! It will be more than OK Fraxinus Raywoodii, named after Ray Wood who lived in South Australia and noticed one of his Fraxinus Oxycarpas was different from the rest I learned that from lacebark Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 25May 27, 2009 7:17 pm Fu Manchu House-To-Be We've decided in Claret Ash so hoping that they will be okay. Australia definitely needs more trees... Sorry Fu, can't take credit for that one, you've taught me something there, thanks Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 26May 27, 2009 8:56 pm Quote: VJ, your garden looks great even with the turf and mulch! I was tempted to replace our Manchurian pear, but I learned that it could grow too high... and I'm after a smaller tree. But really, it looks great! Might consider it for our backyard.. Will surely post the photos once the front landscaping is completed! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 27May 27, 2009 9:09 pm It's very exciting VJ! Can't wait to see the plants when they are in (hint, we would like pics please! ) We are getting a Cercis Forest Pansy for the front yard "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Currently scaping the land. Grow too big? It is the smallest of the ornamental pears only grows 5-6 metres.. Snows and Bradford are large ornamental pears. Oh sorry Fu, I was referring to the Claret Ash that grows around 15m in height... so I still prefer the Manchurian Pear .. because when I saw the Claret Ash on the net... I thought it looks spectacular! But when I learned about the height, I thought that Manchurian Pear would be better for our front yard... after all, you (and some other people in this forum!) recommended it! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Post some photos once you've planted the Forst Pansy.. would love to see it so we could decide whether to plant one at the back. Hope we finish the front landscaping by next week... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 31May 28, 2009 4:11 pm Thank you Fu and Lacebark Pleased the garden guru's gave me the thumbs up. I really like the colour of the Claret Ash and thought it sounded perfect for our front yard and what it requires full sun etc etc. I managed to see a couple yesterday back in my old suburb, my girlfriend has one in her yard which I didn't even realise before VJ, Our bedroom is at the front of the house (upstairs) and gets the afternoon sun so we want the height for that and the deciduous side for winter time. I know it will take years to get tall but I don't plan on moving for awhile Donuts, the Forest Pansy is lovely, I love the colour of the leaves. It's on my shortlist to sit on the other side of our garage in front of the pool area. Our bedroom is also at the front of the house (same as yours), but it's facing South, so not much sun at all... so we prefer a smaller tree in front. Hmm.. now I'm thinking of planting Claret Ash to the Western part of our block... to shade the 2 other rooms at the side of our house. Thanks for explaining that to me, HTB. You gave me a great idea where to plant the Claret Ash. Fu, how about the Forest Pansy, where is the best place to plant it? North? East? West? Our backyard is in the North and we have heaps of space in N/E/W... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Which tree & plants to use for our front garden? 33May 30, 2009 1:21 pm point Cook I guess from memory you'll need to shelter it a little from the hot Northerlies you can get. They can can be a little tender the first few years but like so many plants, they find their feet, harden up and get going after that Winter exposure is not an issue. Murraya could be a great option for you. It creates a great tall screening hedge but doesn't drop fruit like lily pilly. The flowers smell divine. 2 10648 Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9624 |
