Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 16, 2009 5:40 pm My agave succulents have all scratches and stems are broken in parts from where a big tree was cut down which they were at the base and got the brunt of the falling tree. Can I cut off the broken parts...will they grow back like leafy plants do or are succulents different? Any help with be great Re: Tree man has ruined by agave succulent, can I prune it back? 2May 16, 2009 8:18 pm Where they are broken cut them off. The scratched leaves, just leave them be, they'll be fine and new ones will emerge soon enough in a few months. How lucky are you It will be a blessing in disguise The biggest blessing would have been him leaving you all the waste after he put it through his chipper. That stuff is a gardening holy grail The single most water wise and fertiliser wise mulch you can use. all the nutrients that were absorbed by the tree are returned to the soil There is far more it does too but that is another topic Re: Tree man has ruined by agave succulent, can I prune it back? 3May 16, 2009 8:40 pm Thanks for the info, but the tree he cut down was full of termites and was completely dead, so no good stuff was associated with that tree and if I was going to keep the mulch it would be like sprinkling termite food all over the garden. I have been informed woodchip is the worst mulch to use as it is termite heaven. He did mention the right mulch to use if you have had termites in your area, but of course I have forgotten Re: Tree man has ruined by agave succulent, can I prune it back? 4May 16, 2009 9:43 pm I think you'd find that info to be incorrect. It is a topic often discussed at the great gardens workshops. If mulches contain white ants they are very rarely species that are destructive to homes. There are hundreds of termite species in Australia and not all are destructive As for your tree I can understand it is comforting thought to not have used it. If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate using it on my garden There is no real threat. The topic of mulches are fraught with urban myth and misinformation.
