Consider what you would use the area for - relaxation - deck, garden, space for kids to play etc, and work from there, choosing a style that will match your lifestyle and personality - formal, with hedges and strong structural lines; modern, pared down with strong use of both hard and soft elements; native, productive fruit and veg... Whichever you choose, you will probably want to screen off the neighbours a bit. You could consider small deciduous trees to offer shade and cooling un summer and let in light and warmth in winter. Not being very specific, but the final use of the area will dictate what happens next Will it be active - noisy and boisterous kid playing ? or fairly passive - sitting relaxing with a few coldies and mates around ?
