It seems silly to plant plum or apple trees when we are almost surrounded by them Make sure you don't get roses on eastern states root stock! ie. Doctor Huey. Always source your roses grown on "Fortuniana" root stock. Dr Huey is not very disease resistant here and they have very very short life spans. If you get 3yrs out of them, you did well Don't buy those bagged roses you get in winter in some places. It would be rare to get a bagged rose on fortuniana. It will always be marked on the pot that it is grown on fortuniana WA root stock. You'll get a 100 years from them you do pay a bit more though. Usually about $5-10 more. Magnolia Kay Paris if you can Re: What plants do u envisage in yr new home? 12Apr 23, 2009 7:35 pm Good advice Fu. I've already got my 5 roses. they were grafted specially for me. from cuttings I'd done from a plant in my garden because it's no longer a common rose. Got Roworths to do the grafting and grow them out for me. I'd bought the original plant from there 17 years before. I think they got about 25 plants from the 5/6 "bits" I gave them But I may end up getting another one to go in between each of them . Something scented. ( Mine are Scarlet Queen Ellizabeths. I adore the colour. Very vigorous but no scent.) I spotted what you'd written about the magnolia. I'll keep that in mind as well. Re: What plants do u envisage in yr new home? 14Apr 24, 2009 12:07 am If you want purple fountain grass look for the "Pennisetum Advena Rubrum" (or rubra as it is sometimes on the tag as.) That is the smallest of the three types sold. It is commonly sold as red riding hood. It grows way bigger than the 40-50cm it says on the tags Can you squeeze in a few silver birches instead of one? They look fantastic with 3 or 5 of them planted really close. Re: What plants do u envisage in yr new home? 15Apr 24, 2009 5:40 am thanks Fu I will keep an eye out for that one. We should be able to do more than 1 silver birch How far apart do you plant them? Re: What plants do u envisage in yr new home? 20Apr 24, 2009 5:18 pm They are planted around 2 1/2 to 3m apart. 2m is doable as well to good effect Murraya could be a great option for you.
