Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 22, 2009 1:16 am I'm looking at a solution for a cheap but lasting fence to go over the current wire fence in place at the back of my yard. I have neighbors at the back of my home that I want to screen out as their yard is messy and I would just like some privacy. I don't have much money for this project so I'm looking at doing something as cheap as possible. I first thought of a hedge but that could take awhile to grow and a wood fence I could construct myself but that could still be expensive. There is already a sturdy wire fence in place but of course that offers no privacy but it could take some of the weight if I put in a bamboo screen fence. I can pick up these from Bunnings at $20 for 1.8x3 metre sheets so I could probably cover the back fence for less than $200 including a few posts. What do you think about this, what other alternatives could I look at? I don't mind doing the construction. I have some basic landscaping experience and plenty of time. enjoy your life! Re: Bamboo Fence Screen for cheap fence 2Apr 22, 2009 8:09 am Why don't you grow a few climbers on the wire fence, like the Mandevilla White Fantasy? It will cover quickly and look great. From my own experience, the Bamboo fence you are talking about is great except that it warps and weathers badly over a short period of time. Perhaps you could put the bamboo fence up AND the Mandevilla to climb over it. This will help to cover it as it weathers. Depends on where you are located as it dosn't say in your avatar. Maybe Chinese Star Jasmine if you are in a cooler, shadier spot? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Bamboo Fence Screen for cheap fence 3Apr 22, 2009 8:28 am Those bamboo roll out fences from bunnings as still see thru, if u r putting it against a wire fence u still will see in, i have tried it before and ended up returning it, they look good when put against a wood pailing fence to cover it up. I would grow climbers too or if u have space, lillipillis, camelias or what about doing espalier citrus, then u can have some fruit too. Re: Bamboo Fence Screen for cheap fence 4Apr 22, 2009 9:06 am I used some of that screening. To get something approaching a solid blockout I had to use three layers. But I'm also growing some hedges in front. My theory is that by the time the reed fencing is falling to bits the hedge will take over. If you want a quick and nasty planet screen then how about noxious ivy, passionfruit, bamboo, pittosporums or some hop bushes ? Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Bamboo Fence Screen for cheap fence 6Apr 22, 2009 10:32 pm Fu Manchu Hop bushes! Great idea there well said hic! Re: Bamboo Fence Screen for cheap fence 8Apr 23, 2009 8:22 am I used a Hop Bush for screening in a corner and intend to have them all down our driveway. They are lovely. Regular trimming keeps them thick. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Bamboo Fence Screen for cheap fence 9Apr 23, 2009 8:31 am For a cheap quick fix I think the bamboo screen would be a good option, sure it might not totally block the view but it will be better than what you currently have. I would then (as costs permit) plant some hedging plants in front of it to then provide a better block out 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.'
