Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Apr 19, 2009 11:19 am We are in the early stages of putting a garden in along the rear boundary. The edging is in, but we still need to get some more dirt, and we haven't even selected our plants yet. The problem is our leftover brickie's sand, or rather what to do with it. The pic shows how much we have left, and one end of the proposed garden. http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg226/LatVal63/backgarden006.jpg The options: Spread it out thinly over the entire area; Create mounds and cover them with mulch to give the garden some structure; Just pile it up along the fence line; Mix it in with the dirt when we get some more delivered; Dig holes and bury it, displacing the native soil which is clay-ish anyway. Brickies sand gets quite gluggy when wet and I'm a bit concerned that I shouldn't plant anything near it if it is buried in the garden somewhere. Are plants and brickie's sand compatible? Any thoughts? Geoff - Decophile. Re: Should I bury my sand? 2Apr 19, 2009 12:00 pm Do you ever have young kids around the house, or any neighbours that might want it, for a sandpit? You can get those clam ones that can be closed over when not in use and moved around. It isn't loose and granular like the stuff you normally associate with little kids and buckets and spades. It is way stickier than beach sand too. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Should I bury my sand? 5Apr 19, 2009 8:32 pm oh ok then. Do you need to do any more paving? (Could use it as paving sand?) Or can you sprinkle some over your nice grass to help keep the moisture in it? (Your grass might be more established now and not need it but that's what I've been doing to my new turf lately ) "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Or can you sprinkle some over your nice grass to help keep the moisture in it? (Your grass might be more established now and not need it but that's what I've been doing to my new turf lately ) I've got 6 more pavers to lay (not that I'm counting after laying over 200 of them so far ) so I'll only need a few shovels full of sand for that. Unfortunately I don't really have any nice grass either! What you see in the pic is about the best there is! Maybe spreading it on the yard is an option though, maybe if it stays dry it will eventually blow away. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Should I bury my sand? 7Apr 19, 2009 9:53 pm Brickies sand is not suitable for gardens, or sandpits. Under paving, as suggested. In fact many blocks are back filled with it. Nearly all new estates have level terraced blocks and yellow sand is mined around the metro area so there's plenty to go round Things grow better in that than the local soils/sands Re: Should I bury my sand? 9Apr 20, 2009 9:40 am Thanks Fu, cheers mate, a-spreading I will go! Clay soil will love some sand and it will help break it down, especially if you add some lime too. enjoy your life! I'm putting a new floor in my kitchen, slate flagging on a standard concrete slab.
