Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 31, 2009 5:41 am My mum asked me to go to the Flower Show today with her, but I just looked it up on the net and it says it starts tomorrow. Is she losing her marbles already? Anyone else planning on going? I've never been before, any tips on what's good to see? Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 2Mar 31, 2009 6:39 am It's well worth it if you're after landscaping ideas, Donuts. I really want to go too, but not sure if I can get there this year. I usually go with my Mum, but she's just had a knee replacement, so isn't up to the walking. And you're right, it runs from Wednesday to Sunday. Stay away on the weekend, it's a nightmare! Go on a weekday and get there when it opens at 10:00am. You want to be heading home when all the after-lunch crowds turn up. There are some bargains to be had, but for me it's all about the ideas. Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 3Mar 31, 2009 8:08 am thanks kek. Yes she IS losing her marbles; it's not on today, and we've both got stuff on for the rest of the week so we'll miss out this year if anyone else goes would love to hear about what you saw! All of the stalls are set up in the same place you get a real sense of deja vu. I always find it interesting, however very unrealistic, to see the garden displays by students and the likes. Oh I love the Gardening Australia/Burkes Backyard showbags, full of lots of goodies! $20 entry will probably mean we wont go this year but its worth it for first timers. Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 6Mar 31, 2009 11:22 am Yeah the repetitiveness of all garden shows is such a challenge for the organisers of these events. Finding new and interesting plants is also hard. It is incredible that they somehow pull it off year after year. I like to see students designs because they are the unbounded creative minds that will mould the future of landscaping Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 7Mar 31, 2009 11:28 am Fu Manchu Yeah the repetitiveness of all garden shows is such a challenge for the organisers of these events. Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 9Mar 31, 2009 1:18 pm Well said Fu, is it true that being a moderator makes you 30% smarter? Donuts, there are lots of places to sticky beak into the new turf varieties if my memory serves me correctly. Also, my love for Vireya Rhodendrons started at this Show last year, definitely check that out ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 10Apr 01, 2009 9:06 pm well we are definitely going tomorrow now really looking forward to it. If I see a turf I like at a good price I am allowed to order 40sqm just as a practice run to see how we go, then we can get some more later if it dosn't all die! will keep an eye out for the rhodies too ICK "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I learnt a lot. No turf purchased as the only turf guy I saw had no show-only type specials for me. We've planted it as a backdrop to a fishpond and it looks fantastic IMO Donuts. I didn't see any write up about Rhododendrons! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Re: Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2009 19Apr 03, 2009 9:48 am I went to the show yesterday and I agree that a lot of the stores are the same as previous years. I skipped them and concentrated on the show and student gardens which were interesting. The only thing I missed was the Hanging Baskets Competition. (A hint, if you join up to the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria for $10/year, you get several informative newsletters and you can enter the Hanging Basket Comp for free, with basket, liner and 6 punnets of seedlings for free, as well as a double pass to the Garden Show I mainly look for new plants and plant combinations. There is a definite trend towards sustainability with vegetables and herbs being used to great effect. The floral displays are also beautiful. A word of warning, as for many events, food and drink are expensive, with fish and chips + OJ costing $16. I've had it growing in a pot for 2 years and it has not self seeded. I think the weedy one is Pennisetum alopecuroides.
