Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 24, 2009 12:44 pm I was chatting to someone recently who was suggesting that I use steel for the sub frame of my backyard deck with Merbu on top. I have built decks before and always used Treated Pine/Merbu. Has anyone used Steel before? Are there any disadvantages? Advantages? What are the cost diffferences? You can get decking screws to suit steel joists. Re: Anyone ever used Steel as a frame for a deck??? 3Mar 25, 2009 8:18 am Yes i have it worked very well i built it close to the ground so choose steel to prevent rot/termites etc etc i used galv angle (bolted to concrete slab, steel thickness=6-7mm) instead of a face plate and seam welded my steel joists onto this. at half span i had welded another vertical support post and put this into a concrete footing for each joist. then it was just a matter of screwing the galv wingteks (screws that screw straight into steel up to 3mm i think)straight onto the joists didnt even need pilot holes (only on ends) the deck spanned about 3.5m and there was no bounce in it at all cheers Re: Anyone ever used Steel as a frame for a deck??? 4Mar 27, 2009 10:21 pm dinga Yes i have it worked very well i used galv angle (bolted to concrete slab, steel thickness=6-7mm) instead of a face plate and seam welded my steel joists onto this. Can I ask what size steel did you use for the joists? Wall thickness and type (RHS, SHS, C section or Angle?) I'd never considered building our deck from steel, and seeing I work with it all the time it should have been a more logical choice for me instead of timber, just never thought of it as I had never seen it done before.
