Which other timbers are good for decking? Life's too short too drink bad wine Re: Alfresco decking 6Mar 24, 2009 6:18 pm Ironbark is a mix of reds and dark browns which occasional sappy light streaks Tallowood is a dark blonde to light brown colour. Tallowood was commonly used for decking in the days gone as its very durable and not liked by white-ants. Its very oily and doesn't hold a decking finish very well. That was that quite a while ago. They used 200,000 cubic metres of it. It has been right down in price since then and back up now because of the dollar slump. Meranti and most other south-east asian timbers have also gone up a bit.
