Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 14, 2009 5:03 pm We have a massive (HUGE) rock along the back boundary of our block (we only have 12m wide block) and am having trouble trying to work out how to get post holes into the rock! We had a rock breaker in at site cut to do the boundary edge but now we have to organise a retaining wall along there and am concerned about the lack of knowledge of what to do by any associated trades (excavators etc). Does anyone know if you can just screw into rock (for the posts) rather than dig?! The rock is not going anywhere and a few friends that are builders can't believe the size of it..... Re: Retaining wall - can i screw into rock rather than drill?? 2Mar 14, 2009 5:48 pm You will need to go into the rock for lateral stability. The posts will fall over otherwise Re: Retaining wall - can i screw into rock rather than drill?? 3Mar 14, 2009 6:12 pm Dukekamaya has made a good point.
As for attaching to rock the short answer is yes there are a million and one methods of attaching to concrete or rock just stop into your local Ramset or Hilti distributor and you will be swamped with choices. Once you have attached the base of your retaining wall post to the rock with ramset or hilti fastener you will most definitely need to have a brace that attaches towards the top of the post and angles back into the area behind the wall. There you will need to make a second attachment to the rock. Don't be disheartened about he lack of knowledge re your predicament I reckon it is pretty common...if you are presenting a scenerio that is slightly outside of the box you will see trades drop away left right and centre as they are more comfortabled with the common everyday problems and it is more profitable to deal with simple jobs quickly and lots of them. You are going to have to be a little creative here but on the upside you have a dirty big rock to attach to that ain't going anywhere in a hurry which is good. Re: Retaining wall - can i screw into rock rather than drill?? 4Mar 16, 2009 7:27 pm Why don't you build a stone/block/brick wall instead of trying to get posts in? I have a box of quality drill bits that seem to be new but their engraved sizes covered by rust ,,,,I tried to sand them to see their sizes but still I am finding… 0 1497 If what you describe is correct then the brick wall has been dry lined with villa board. That basically means that the villa board is glued to the brick wall with… 3 8548 Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 6092 |
