Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 01, 2009 6:58 pm Hi, first time user long time reader. Love this forum
I'll dive straight in at the deep end - I've had a few quotes from landscapers and am not sure which way to go in regard to having a concrete slab laid under pavers or not. Half the landscapers say as long as you don't have heavy traffic on it, which we won't, you don't really need it. 100mm hardcore base would be fine. The other half say its a definate and then criticise the first half. Looking at the quotes it makes a big difference, 3-4k to the job which i'm reluctant to spend if i don't really need to. Thing is, i've read a few DIY books from the library and none of them mention the need for it under a normal backyard patio - am i missing something. I realise you will, over time, get some settlement - but i couldn't imagine it being much if the hardcore is levelled and compacted enough. One idea i thought of would be getting them to put a 150mm hardcore base - just on the safe side. It would cost more but not as much as the concrete. Help.... We also have pavers as the actual road.
The footpath ones are not laid on anything. They are quite good except for where large trees have lifted them. But a large tree would lift the concrete anyway I guess. I don't think I'd bothered with a concrete base. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Do i need a concrete slab under pavers? 4Mar 01, 2009 7:13 pm We are not getting a concrete base. Mostly for the cost, and as you mentioned Tracey, there will only be light traffic on our pavers (bbq, outdoor setting, some pot plants, us ).
DH says that the higher the percentage of your block that is concreted, the higher the risk of drainage problems, so he is also against it for this reason. Re: Do i need a concrete slab under pavers? 5Mar 01, 2009 11:50 pm ...for vehicle traffic an absolute must to have concrete...for other light traffic areas compacting a good quality base is perfect, just make sure you compact it properly. I've even dry-mixed cement with the base before spreading and compacting, hosing in as you compact, just a thought as it works very well. The width is about 1000mm maybe. That conduit in the photo is for the NBN. The water is about… 4 8038 |
