Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 22, 2009 8:03 pm We would like to replace the grass at the very front bottom of our garden with something else. We have a big eucalyptus tree, grass doesn't grow in the shade, its gets a bit dry in summer and is also too much grass to mow.
Doesnt do much except look good So to save water and mowing, we're thinking of putting maybe pine bark instead. Do we need to get something to dig up the lawn first, so that the pine bark sits at a certain level instead of overflowing on to the road? Do we need some kind of border to stop it spilling on the road? For example, a deep layer of pine bark would make that section of footpath virtually impassable for prams. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: How to replace grass with something else like pine bark 3Feb 22, 2009 9:23 pm The ground looks fairly even, I dont think the lawn needs digging out, it looks fairly dead already , perhaps poison the lawn and then lay down weedmat so it doesnt grow back thru the bark chips, looking at the pic, I think you would need a concrete border or similar retainer to keep the bark chips from spilling over onto the road.
I think this would look good with bark chips or pebbles, and then the tree standing alone as the main feature. Re: How to replace grass with something else like pine bark 4Feb 22, 2009 9:35 pm Its common around my area (outer east) to do something with the dust bowls we used to call nature strips. Especially when there is not footpath like your's seems to be.
Some use pine bark, some do the long grasses (mondo etc) some do a combination of both. I think pebbles would be problematic. You could make a border with grasses ?. My suggestion is to get a bobcat to clean the turf away. Most common types will still shoot from Rhizomes under the ground and especially when stressed from poisoning which only kills a small section of the root. very small. Take it right back, lay the pine bark and I'd bung in a few low growing natives like Grevillea seasprite or tough plants like shore juniper. They'll look great no matter what. If you don't put anything in there, the weeds will take hold (yes even with weed mat) and you will find yourself spraying. Large areas of pine bark can also be a fire hazard. I see it a lot around here when some "ick'en fudiot" flicks a smoke out the window. next thing you got a smouldering fire. as said, check with the council too. If you want a spray to absolutely kill the turf look for "Fusilade" at an ag supplier. 1 litre is the smallest size, that covers a hectare, and it costs about $150. dead grass guaranteed. It is the opposite to weed and feed. won't harm the tree at all. Using round up will be WOFTAM on the grass. Fusilade is toxic stuff so wear gloves and mask, spray upwind, wear long pants and long sleeves and most importantly, add seasol and spray early in the day without rain.
