Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 06, 2009 6:44 pm Ok... so after browing around at other people's projects and just general looks at houses with sloped gardens, I've noticed a lot of people use wooden sleepers as a retaining barrier etc...
I think it will suit our native garden and house... but the husband is dead against this idea as he says it will rot? Any thoughts or alternatives I can look at? I want something that will either look seamless or natural. Concrete is out because of the soil and I'm just not convinced that the garden eding systems suit our house. Thanks again for your input. Re: Wooden retaining wall 2Feb 06, 2009 10:10 pm Not 100% sure what you are asking here? in theory you can have anything you want it is your budget that will drive the decision in the end.
Modern treated pine (H4) comes with a 40 year guarentee and is without doubt your cheapest option when it comes to retaining walls. It all comes back to what you are prepared to spend to hold back some dirt and achieve a look that you will be happy with. Bush rock retaining walls are a natural look but that will cost you......how much do you have to retain and how much are you willing to spend??? PS Just out of curiosity why is concrete out because of the soil??? what does the soil have to do with it?? Re: Wooden retaining wall 3Feb 07, 2009 8:53 am Well, we don't want to spend an absolute fortune. We have a 20m frontage so would like to keep the cost of the retaining aspect of the fence under 2k...
We had got a quote for a rendered concrete fence but were told that because the soil is such heavy clay that it will cause cracking through the wall. As it's a front fence, we don't want huge cracks in it. If this is incorrect, then I will ask my husband to approach the builder again. However, there is already a small concrete wall there now and it has severe cracking throughout, so I assumed he was correct. Re: Wooden retaining wall 4Feb 07, 2009 8:59 am We used redgum sleepers for a retaining wall in 1986. Theyre' still standing.
Treated pine would be better still. Re: Wooden retaining wall 5Feb 07, 2009 9:56 pm Hi
We have very clayey soil - But we are thinking of using concrete sleepers The person who quoted did not say any issues with clay - We better check out too They have ones which look like timber too which actually looked good http://www.retainingaustralia.com.au/co ... ducts.html Re: Wooden retaining wall 6Feb 07, 2009 10:02 pm beegeers Hi We have very clayey soil - But we are thinking of using concrete sleepers The person who quoted did not say any issues with clay - We better check out too They have ones which look like timber too which actually looked good http://www.retainingaustralia.com.au/co ... ducts.html Concrete sleepers wont be a problem, as they can move with the soil. Looks like I might have found what I need for my backyard retaining wall! Fence, paving, retaining wall - CHECK! Still so much more to do..... Re: Wooden retaining wall 8Feb 08, 2009 10:37 am beegers - thanks for posting that link. My husband had been asking about concrete sleepers and I was worried they would be ugly.. but those look really good. And I'm really surprised how affordable they are also. I will definitely have to see if we can get these in Brisbane.
Our builder said that the deep footings needed for a concrete fence were the problem because it wll move and crack. From what he said though, sleepers on top would be fine. Thanks for confirming wake_me Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
