Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 13, 2009 8:48 pm Hi guys, well we are nearing the point where we have to make some hard and fast decisions about driveway and garden etc etc. We have more or less decided on the driveway/porch arrangements but we have no idea about the little front yard that we have left to fill in. To help us out we have thrown the house and the driveway into a simple 3d program and heres what it looks like:
Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The plants on the left were meant to be yucca's and we are reasonably happy with this plan. The large 'void' like section on the right we have no idea about! help!! We really didn't want any grass as we plan for zero mowing around this new house, so we are looking for ideas! Re: Another help with front landscaping thread! help! :P 3Jan 13, 2009 9:19 pm What about 'borrowing' ideas from the picture of the display home on the website? There's not a single blade of grass there. And it looks pretty low maintenance to me. Plus I also like the design. LOC, the website is www.porterdavis.com.au, their displays are all their and you can see the front yards of each. donuts, the front yard is North facing. YSSIM, we have looked at a few of those designs but they just don't grab us . The Illoura one was initially what we wanted then we shied away from external timber, especially the walkways to nowhere, and haven't been a fan of front yard water features either. Unfortunately I think if that was removed from the Illoura demonstration yard we thought it might look a little weird with the lines running full length of the yard uninterrupted Re: Another help with front landscaping thread! help! :P 6Jan 14, 2009 8:28 am I'm with you on the zero grass - we're going for a design inspired by the PD and S1monds displays at Mernda Villages, so "blocks" of pebbles and mulch - but we'll have a path through the middle of our yard, running around to the side gate, which will break it up so it looks less stripey.
How about a dry creek bed, using pebbles? There are a couple of nice ones around - one in Le Page Run and another in (I think) Eildon Circuit, for inspiration. The first one is a PD home - the Francis, I think. Think about things like whether you'll have a side gate, and how you'll get access to it. Also, where will you store your bins? If at the side of the house, you'll need some sort of path the get them to and from the kerb. If you're keeping them in the garage, no problem. Also leave access for the gas and power meter readers....if things get too bushy or prickly around the meters, they'll just guesstimate.... Do you need to shade the front windows? Deciduous trees in the right spot might be useful to allow winter sun in. Did you get free landscaping as part of your land deal? If so, the landscaping guys can help with suggestions. Re: Another help with front landscaping thread! help! :P 7Jan 14, 2009 8:55 am Hey mikkyg,
More info required please!!! We know the following... You don't want grass, you don't want any exterior timber feature pathways, you don't like water features in the front yard, the area to be dealt with is not too big.... Now we need to know what type of gardens do you like? Formal? Native? Do you like flowering plants? Tall trees? Access required at side of house? I think you have the bones in place, but I would probably extend that little garden bed in the middle right up to the portico to break up the expanse of concrete. ( You can enter the portico still from the garage side can't you? ) Also, maybe if you like the Yuccas then consider using them in a row again on the right hand side for symmetry. I haven't been to Hawstowe for awhile so I'm not sure how built up it is now and how their gardens are coming along....have a walk through your estate or drive to another estate where the landscaping is a little further along, park your car then walk the streets looking for inspiration! You could try looking at other display homes, but you're right, they are big on timber and water features. plant choice? 8Jan 14, 2009 4:09 pm Maybe you could fill the area with 3 different size river stones (pebbles) small then medium and large all in nice muted natural tones in natural proportions. Then pop in a few grasses, Dianella's Lomandra, Phormium (Flax) perhaps a low growing ground cover grevillea (maybe the Bedspread variety) or similar to add a nice red zing with it's flowers? Simple but calm and with a little statement?
