Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 13, 2009 1:33 pm Hi, I am after suggestions for a tree to plant in our back yard. It's quite a big area, but there are other houses around, so I don't want anything too big that will block their view too much. I want something that will be fairly fast growing and most importantly something that my kids will be able to climb. I think its sad these days that kids rarely get to climb trees!
We have that rich red clay soil, which I am going to improve with lots of organic matter. We will have rainwater tanks for irrigation, but I want something that isn't too thirsty. I'm considering a mulberry tree, but I'm a little concerned about all the red stained bird poo everywhere!! Please help me!! Thanks. The type of tree depends on your personal taste but is also dictated by your back yard. Do you have any pipes or easements? if so, there are many species to stay away from. Your local water provider should have a brochure or online info to let you know what not to plant. Look around at the other houses in the area and you might get a feel for what grows well in your area. Maybe a bit on the small side for your requirements, at our first house we had a Dwarf Sugar Gum (Eucalyptus Cladocalyx Nana) on the fenceline that supposedly only grows to 8 metres, but ours grew to about 6 metres after about 3 years. The kids certainly found out it was climbable . Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ You should also be able to get some good advice from your local nursery. Re: Can you please suggest a tree? 4Jan 14, 2009 9:16 pm Jen I have posted in many threads about great trees to plant. Now how to find them all
I will do some searching Re: Can you please suggest a tree? 5Jan 15, 2009 12:32 am https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=24146#24146

I think I will plant a few! The back yard is about 25m deep and 25m wide. I will also put one out the front. I guess the hard bit now will be finding plants that compliment each other.
The most important thing to me at the moment though is that I plant one that the kids will be able to climb 5-10 years down the track. Which of the trees that you mention in your threads would be best for climbing? Thanks.
