Any suggestions for a shrub, small tree, anything that will take complete shade through winter and mostly full sun during summer?

look at planting Magnolia "little gem" or better still "kay paris" Frangipani might be another choice seeing they loose their leaves in winter anyway. I have one in a position almost exactly the same as what you are after. Port wine magnolia might be another option, however it will get a bit burnt for the first year or two but it will toughen up and be fine after that for a small shrub maybe caprosmas? lots of colours available now Hibiscus perhapes? Hymenosporum flavum is a wonderful small tree here in Perth. It grows much bigger on the east coast 3-4m here Correa dusky bells will absolutely love that spot. lovely bell shaped flowers in late winter and the birds love it. smallish shrub. They don't look much when you buy them but once in your garden with some good clipping they can look amazing in a very short time. i have had success in that sort of spot with Darwinias, erimophilas, and philothecas (which have a lovely fresh fragrance to the foliage) what ever you choose make sure you use some seasol and Baileys soil improver before it goes into the soil and it will be even happier Re: Shade happy tree? 3Jan 09, 2009 9:47 pm Thanks, I'll bookmark that list so I can write it all down and go hunting next time I'm in a nursery. I was wondering about Magnolias, if they would take the complete shade through the larger part of the year. Actually now I think of it, camelias probably would work too. Hmm. have to find something that fits in with the look of the other plants.
Some of those names I'll have to google to find out what they look like.. I bought three magnolias, all about 50cm - 80cm tall. Looked great until the first hot day, then ever after they have lots of yellow and brown leaves that look burnt & brittle. New growth is happening, but to me they look sick. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Shade happy tree? 5Jan 09, 2009 11:11 pm I have a myrtle that is doing this too, sunburnt leaves on tips, but fresh new growth coming in, guess the overall health of the tree is good then. Glad you could pick something useful out of this thread too Hello. I just bought a few acres in Habana, Mackay, and my horses seem to love hanging around under this tree. I would like to name the paddock after this tree. Can… 0 9528 Fellow Perth dweller. Looks like pruns nigra. It's a dark leaf flowering plum. Doesn't get massive and is easily trimmed deciduous tree.
