Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jan 08, 2009 9:19 pm Hi all
I'm a newbie so be kind (and I have looked through the forums for an existing answer but no luck)! I am looking at getting a wall put up to reduce noise coming from a 2 way, double lane road (60kmh limit) and was looking for guidance on what material/product would be the best. Vibration is also an issue but is secondary. The front wall would be 5m from the road and would be 4m long with 2 side walls both about 6 metres going back to the house. Any indications on relative cost would also be good if you are in the know. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks D Re: External wall - best for sound proofing against road noise 3Jan 09, 2009 9:32 pm As per above, rockwool is sound absorbing - and abig high solid fence s the first line of noise defence. ie deflect it over and above the house as much as possible. Re: External wall - best for sound proofing against road noise 5Jul 17, 2009 11:46 pm there is some good threads on this from old Homeone threads of the past. search fences and bammo Ironically we were discussing this topic before dinner tonight. I have done a garden recently on a busy road and from the front door you can hear very little noise on what is otherwise a very exposed frontage.- very. The whole front is planted with low dense foliage and it absorbs a huge amount of the road noise. Now my sister lives on a very busy corner and she has a hedge of Murraya the whole way round. I'll have to ask her permission to post photos but it too absorbs a fair whack of road noise. It is a very busy Brissie intersection too. It is the hedge that really got me sold on Murraya and I now use them with very good success in what is the poorest soils in the world for gardening and agriculture and very different climate from Brissie. You lucky buggers in Brissie. If you could smash Perth and Brissie together, you'd have the perfect Aussie city Anyway, good luck with it Re: External wall - best for sound proofing against road noise 6Jul 18, 2009 7:25 pm I live in the exact same situation. My house did have a Polygala and Genista hedge (i got rid of that real quick) and ripped them out with the dingo, the place felt naked without that screen there. I extended up the fence pillars, faced them with random bluestone and did a merbau screen inbetween the pillars. Then behind have some 1.5m high shrubs that do screen well, our house has double glazed windows too which takes the noise away when indoors. In the backyard you hardly hear the traffic.
