One that mows itself!! Bawahahahahaha For me it has to be Couch grass. I have just seeded my back yard with it and look forward to playing on it for many years to come. Make sure if you seed it you use 'Munns'. FuManchu put me on to it and it works an absolute treat! Re: Whats the best type of lawn 3Dec 29, 2008 7:39 pm don't pick wintergreen ... it will give you the s**** trying to keep it green . Re: Whats the best type of lawn 4Dec 30, 2008 11:39 am I have had an interesting disagreement/ discussion on an other forum over the use of couch. If ever there was a turf variety guaranteed to get into the garden beds and be seemingly impossible to remove from them, it is couch. no matter what the variety.
They do have a place in growing turf butin my opinion that remains in sporting applications where it is an excellent choice. cricket pitches, golf greens and tees, bowling greens. in the domestic market I'd rather recommend many others before a couch of anysort. It does appear to require less water in soils that aren't sandy than it does here in Perth. That to me doesn't make it a waterwise turf though. AND IT CREEPS EVERYWHERE. I'd go with a buffalo myself. Re: Whats the best type of lawn 7Dec 30, 2008 8:54 pm What about Sapphire, a soft leaf buffalo?
We're currently reading up on what type of lawn to plant & DH thinks we'll go Sapphire, does anyone know much about this one? We have got lots of lawn to plant....the area we've fenced off for our house is 2 acres... , we have our own underground water, and obviously want something that is drought tolerant, but still needs to be nice for the kids to play on. Re: Whats the best type of lawn 8Dec 30, 2008 9:12 pm I don't know much about lawn myself. But all landscapers and landscape designers I have spoken to so far suggests either Sir Walter or Matilda. They both a buffalo grass. Building Clarendon Brighton - Done and moved in Sept 2009 Re: Whats the best type of lawn 9Dec 30, 2008 9:15 pm Sir Walter sucks in the winter. We have had it in our last house as well as in-laws in theirs. Looks fine as long as you keep the water up to it in Summer but don't overdo it - doesn't like to get too wet. Then in winter it always turned a disgusting colour. Even our landscaper didn't like it over winter.
We have been discussing turf with the local NRL groundskeeper - we really want the turf that they use on the football field - but it is American and needs heaps of water to keep it lush. We will probably go artificial around the pool areas and then have to find a lush green turf for the rest of the yard. Some things are worth waiting for.
