Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 16, 2008 9:35 am Hey there,
Timber screen fences seem to be all the rage these days, so currently I am looking for around 600 LM of Spotted gum (85x19)...and i'm not having a lot of luck! I have been dealing with Boral and they suggest that I use 'white mahogany' as it's much easier to come by... Does anybody know of another supplier so that I can track down spotted gum or alternatively, if you could recommend a timber which is similar in appearance...? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Re: Timber fence pailings (for a screen fence) 2Dec 16, 2008 4:31 pm I can't suggest any suppliers, and neither can I make any promises about the availability of the following, but you could look at Tallowwood or Blackbutt as alternatives.

Make sure you use Qld spotted gum in that sort of application, NSW spotty is very sap heavy and will rot fairly quickly. We actually ACQ treat our NSW spotted gum decking at work. Screen/ fencing in that style is normally done in 65mm x 19mm which will be much cheaper Re: Timber fence pailings (for a screen fence) 4Dec 19, 2008 7:25 am Thanks guys,
I have resided to the fact that spotted gum is too difficult to source. I have just received samples from Boral as alternatives: - Black Butt - White Mahogony - Iron Bark I am still looking at using 89 x 19 (cost isn't an issue). Is there any reason why I shouldn't go with any of the above? Cheers Re: Timber fence pailings (for a screen fence) 5Dec 19, 2008 8:05 pm All are durable outdoor eucalypts - the ironbark would be the best, its durability 1 and not a first choice for termites. Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15924 You have no photo with your post.
