Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 12, 2008 2:21 pm Hi all
We have been in our house almost 12 months, and we are only just getting to our backyard and fence. We live on a 10 acre block, so have external fences, but have had so much to do inside that we are now just getting to our back fence (the process being sped up by the fact that we just got a little border collie pup that is living with my parents until our fence is finished, and we miss her terribly). We have so much room we are luckily enough to be able have whatever size backyard we want. Just wondering what size backyards people have. I know there probably isn't an average size, just wondering what other people have from the back of their house to their back fence. Re: How big is your backyard? 2Dec 12, 2008 2:54 pm From the back of our house to our fence we have 8m, we have 15.24m in width, I'd prefer a bit bigger but I'm happy that we can still fit a trampoline and a swingset. We also have an alfresco area that is not included in the backyard size so that helps make it feel a bit bigger My karma ran over your dogma Re: How big is your backyard? 3Dec 12, 2008 3:01 pm our house is built towards the front of the block, not exactly sure of the 'backyard' size but the picture should give an idea. total size of block is 840, and our home is a largish 3br.
the yard is great for our 2 boys and 2 (now 1) dogs to run around in comfortably Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: How big is your backyard? 5Dec 12, 2008 4:35 pm joles We will have approximately 30m from the back of the house to the rear fence and the block is 25.5m wide. That makes my 18 metres from back of house to fence and 15 metres across look sad. Plus the fact we had to have a 7 1/2 metre setback. Why can't setbacks be much lesser, backyard is way more usable space. Enjoy that space it will be fantastic. And I'm just ignoring Spot because I'm way too jealous about that amount of space. Re: How big is your backyard? 6Dec 12, 2008 4:38 pm we will have a 6x4m patch of lawn at our side... which I still think is too big!!! We will have a 5x3 alresco and that will mean we might actually use the backyard unlike our houses for the last 6 years.... Yep photogirl, I am also ignoring Spot for the same reason. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Here is our backyard, total depth from house to back fence is 15 m, there will be a shed and a garden in it when its finished. Alfresco area is behind the garage at the side of the house. Total size of block is 707m2, smaller than our previous block which was just over 1000m2, we wanted a good size block but smaller than last one which was just too big for us now. Re: How big is your backyard? 9Dec 12, 2008 7:44 pm We've got 15.5m width x 10m from back of house to fence, plus approx 6x6m alfresco. But if I had 10 acres I'd make it heaps more, Jo's size sounds good - nice and spacious, but not so big you can't maintain it easily.
Do you want to do much other than have space for your pup to run around in? Do you want a garden, a pool? Remember to factor in space for these as well if you do. Re: How big is your backyard? 10Dec 12, 2008 10:38 pm Our block is around 840 sqm and is a battle axe shape. The left corner is about 15 meters from the rear house and the right is about 9 meters. The entire back fence line is around 27 meters.
About a meter or so will be taken up by a retaining wall. FD2 www.thebedbug.com.au Children's Licenced and Treehouse Manchester for all of those new rooms! I'll never go back. Most of that is bush but I have to mow approx 3 acres. Takes just over 1 hour.
A mate with an 1/4 acre block takes longer to mow and edge! The kids live and play and explore outside now, they've pretty much given away the TV. FD2 Hi Fringe, Silly question but by any chance did you buy in Narre Warren Northish?? Re: How big is your backyard? 14Dec 13, 2008 9:39 am Well I grew up with a 250 acre back yard... and I never want that type of yard again!!! You soon got pretty bored of being isolated from everyone!! Re: How big is your backyard? 15Dec 13, 2008 4:02 pm I am currently living in a townhouse with a 3m x 4m courtyard. When my build is complete, I will have a 15m x 15m backyard, not including my 7m x 4m alfresco. I am looking forward to my new backyard for my kid to run around, but definitely not looking forward mowing it.
I guess, one day, when I retire, I may consider having a bush behind my backyard.....hmmm...maybe not...I will probably be moving into an apartment instead Building Clarendon Brighton - Done and moved in Sept 2009 Re: How big is your backyard? 16Dec 13, 2008 8:56 pm We'll have about 13m x 15m when we're done, which is quite a decent yard for our area! We have a decent front yard, too. We are putting a pool in that has a lap pool along the side, then a big square bit, spa and swim out bit at the back.
Our problem with landscaping is that the (rotten ) Council even have a say in that!!!! We even have to get permission to take out dead trees . Our landscape plan (which they said was beautiful- their words -) was rejected, b/c it didn't comprise enough native, indigenous (aka "ugly weeds") plants ...... Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: How big is your backyard? 18Dec 13, 2008 9:31 pm hmm well I certainly haven't got 10 acres to my name but we are building on 3/4 of an acre.
From memory we have approximately 17 m from the roadside to the front of the house. Then the house and the house finishes about half way onto the block. Back: We do have a 10 m easement along the back of the block between us and a plum farm. The developer was to plant trees there as part of the OH & S requirements because of the plum farm. ( all those sprays they use) He told us he was going to plant weeping peppermint trees and that they had been ordered which we were delighted about. We are still waiting for this to happen. It's been 10 months since we purchased the land now. I'm trying to get council to chase the developer up about them since it was supposed to be a requirement for him to do it. The easement only lasts for 2 years though. We haven't really planned what we'll do out the back apart from considering a veggie garden somewhere and some chooks and some fruit trees. And possibly a huge shed in the far back corner one day. We have 2 varieties of grass tree in our back yard area and some gum trees and we intend to keep them so At least part of the back garden will be native plants to compliment these. I would like a pond at some stage. yes I'm one of "those" people who likes the sound of running water. I quite like the dry creekbed look that a few people are into at the moment. We have a huge problem with rock in the garden so we won't be doing much digging in the back yard at all. Laundry side: One side( (nwest) will have the clothes line and a quiet contemplative garden area eventually. With some sort of hedging plant between us and our future neighbours. This will be our only side that we will have neighbours on until the plum farm gets rezoning approval. ( will be 3+ yrs) Main road side: The other side which faces onto road will eventually have an extended patio and an above ground spa area. Close to our boundary on that side I plan to put in Grevillea "ned kellys" to make a native hedge. We are up from the road and these will be down at road level. Front: We plan to do a huge curved garden bed out the front with additional non native trees and put in a small lawn patch there as well. Plants to go in the garden bed include Dieties http://www.abulk.com.au/awn/Dieties.html Mum has been propagating these from plants in her garden. I've brought about 50 down to our rental already and she has over 100 still at her house of differing sizes.Rhoeo's ( thanks Mum again) roses.agapanthus , a Flowering plum. some other ornamental type deciduous trees to be decided still. There will be a garden bench somewhere. Possibly near the blank wall of our bedroom, All around: We will have retaining walls to build as the builders have raised the house pad a lot.
