Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 26, 2008 11:38 am Hi I want to build a waterfeature and a pond and just wondering what peoples thoughts are. Do you like them or are they a waste of time and space. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: Waterfeater and Pond Yay or Nay 3Nov 26, 2008 11:49 am We love them too, I just need to talk DW into a pond. We want a little getaway in the yard from the noisy kids. Somewhere we can have a drink and sit back and listen to the bubbling brook. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Re: Waterfeater and Pond Yay or Nay 4Nov 26, 2008 3:28 pm There is a big discussion about this.... where myself and to_do_list got into it over water features and ponds....
I feel really, really, really strongly about this..... and I know I'm in the minority.... I hate them for one reason. They are bloody dangerous.... They are an exposed body of water and as dangerous as any swimming pool (to very young children) but yet the don't require any fencing or precautions. Go to a display home and watch how fascinated the toddlers are by the water features. There's enough drownings in swimming pools.... drownings in backyard water features are a matter of time..... The risk is not worth having something pretty in my opinion. Here's the thread with the discussion.... something to think about.... Jo https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... 61&start=0 I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. We have previously had just a water feature and it was nice but it was in view and earshot of our Alfresco and boy was it good when you finally turned it off..... its amazing how noisey and loud water features can be.......if you just want the feel of water around just one of those bubblers would do the trick and you could plug it in or attach to your wall.....like this one from freedom with the 3 spouts down the bottom. They have a hook on the back and they are supplied with brackets for you to mount easily. Jo https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... 61&start=0 Thanks for that Jo, There were some great points from both sides of the debate. It makes you think. Although my kids are older I do have a younger neice which I would need to consider for the few times my brother visits. Cheers. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. Re: Waterfeater and Pond Yay or Nay 7Nov 27, 2008 3:39 pm There is a way around the safety issue and having a pond, have a secret/adult garden, that is fenced off, the fence is covered with vines/shrubs or whatever and accessible only through a high non-see through gate.
Maggie Re: Waterfeater and Pond Yay or Nay 8Nov 27, 2008 7:21 pm do it. when done right they will make the garden complete. The sound of naturally running water is hard to beat. I hate the sound of most water features. They sound like someone weeing into the water. Re: Waterfeater and Pond Yay or Nay 9Nov 27, 2008 8:25 pm I strongly dislike so-called "water features" for many reasons. But this movie clip explains why I also find them so funny.

I can also see that some water features can be a drowning hazard. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

Thanks for your views and I have considered both sides of the arguments, I love the sound of water and it does actually relax me so this will be a benefit when i need some destressing. Drink in one hand and laying back in a comfy chair listening to the sound of the water.

The gist is that the "water feature" is only turned on in a pathetic attempt to impress important visitors. It's a central part of the movie (which is very funny btw. The movie is "Mon Uncle" ) Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Waterfeater and Pond Yay or Nay 15Nov 29, 2008 8:57 am check these out. They look really great and are so easy to set up. Worth it when you way up costs, risk and labour of building your with real rocks.
