Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ It's such a lot of wasted space and it is far bigger than I first remembered it! I just wanted to bobcat it all out, but is this a viable option? I'm really lost at what to do about it. Frontage is over 18ms. The concrete is about 30-40cms high and around half a metre wide. Obviously the fence is going... but I have no idea what type of fence / area to rebuild to get rid of the mess that's there now. Also.. um.. I'm very dumb at landscaping, but can we just change the slope of the front yard so it's far more gradual? The yard is basically bare bar the garden beds and that weird concrete retaining wall area... I just want natives throughout the yard.. and probably just grass landscaping wise (ie. basically, bare ) Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 2Nov 24, 2008 4:57 pm What type of fence you have is determined by the type of house you have.
I would keep the ditch and turn it into a garden bed. Removing the wall and resurfacing the land might be costly. Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 3Nov 24, 2008 5:03 pm Dan, we just have a postwar that we are just going to modernise.
I had considered what you suggested but really can't imagine how that will work with plants etc - would it have to be a concrete fence on the other side? Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 4Nov 24, 2008 5:10 pm How about turning that retaining wall into a planter box, built up on the front. So the front of the planter box would be 30-40cm high facing the street and the back would be level with the rest of the grass. Then you could plant some kind of hedge in it instead of having a front fence. Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 6Nov 24, 2008 5:56 pm Bob cat it all out.
Or spend a few weekends with a sledge hammer and do it yourselves. Build a new fence and progress from there. The world is your oyster! Its good……blank canvas, much better than having someone else’s jungle to pull out. Well, we got the bad news about our possible retaining wall / fence combo... and it's just not going to happen with the really crappy clay soil we have. The guys will still do it, but warn us that the cracking through the concrete or blocks could be pretty severe. I don't know what to do now. We need some kind of retaining wall that won't crack... or something. And we definitely need a new fence. Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 9Jan 28, 2009 3:45 pm It's hard to tell what's going to fit from that one photo, but how about just knocking down the white fence, giving the concrete a blast clean, and planting a nice big hedge. There are so many interesting hedge choices (many have been discussed on the forum). Do the hard jobs first. You already have the perfect footing for them. -Sha Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 11Jan 28, 2009 5:12 pm I can't see that it needs a retaining wall. The slope looks incredibly gradual to me. Do the hard jobs first. Then plant some prostrates like the Acacia, "Golden Lace" that can hang over the retaining wall. Add some King Proteas, grevilleas and Kangaroo Paws and it will look splendid. Adrian T. Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 13Jan 29, 2009 12:24 pm Thanks for the great suggestions everyone.
We are in a bit of a bind because we have pets which would need to keep secured. We've got some more contractors coming out tomorrow so hopefully someone can suggest something. Re: Suggestions on what to do with our horrible front yard 14Jan 29, 2009 1:00 pm How about putting some stone or blocks in front of the concrete, and then capping them. Have a look at this shot below:
