Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Nov 14, 2008 2:17 pm I was hoping someone could tell me what the cheapest way of grassing my backyard. It is a space about about 10 m wide and 7m long.
Would laying turf be best or using a rotarty hoe to level and then lay grass seed? Seed would be cheaper i guess but does it work? Re: Grass in the backyard 2Nov 14, 2008 2:20 pm Absolute cheapest is seed - less than $0.50 per sqm. But it takes about 3 months to get full coverage - and you'll need to water well during this period.
Rolls of turf are quickest for instant lawn - depending on the grass type $3 - $6/sqm There is a special tool to use after you've gone through with the rotary hoe - can't remember it's name - to flatten/level out the site as much as possible - otherwise you'll end up with potholes! If not choose runners of a soft leaf buffalo. Re: Grass in the backyard 5Nov 14, 2008 6:11 pm I just threws down $25.00 of Munns couch/cooch on wednesday night.
I also spread some scotts lawn starting fertilizer down to give it a start too ($14). The area was about 18x4 metres (72sqm) so for $0.55cents per square metre I hope to have some nice grass. Munns (I hear) is good stuff... Re: Grass in the backyard 6Nov 14, 2008 6:20 pm Get hold of a wooden pallet and drag it over the rotary hoed loose soil until it is level. The pallet idea sounds good but I would be really careful of the old back. Maybe a light weight pine one would be better. I think it needs to be fenced off (and you have to try and stop birds from eating the seed as well!) After 4 years - we're in!
