I'm looking to refresh an existing brick retaining wall and garden beds and was wondering if I can use fibre cement board (like the hardie board cladding) and clad over an existing retaining wall? Similar to cladding around a brick house. Is this possible at all and will I need to do anything different given there will be more moisture as it's a retaining wall?
Other option was to render over it but I have read it will fall off after 12 months due to moisture.
Here's what the wall looks like

they render planters and garden beds and the render doesnt drop off. Dunno if the same applies here, but Id assume it would have to be an extreme case for it to do that.
I think it's ok if the preparation was done correctly and the backing is sealed with some sort of sealant or waterproof membrane. I don't believe my wall is which may rule out that option. I could be wrong though and keen to hear the thoughts of others who may have done this in the past.
