Hi,
I have a parking space where the ground is a clay soil mixed with stones. For council reasons I need to install grass (or similar) but still use it as a parking space. I plan to install SurePave plastic grids to reinforce the ground. This reduces ground compaction and helps protect the grass root structure. Realistically though, I don't expect this to be a 'perfect' lawn both because of the wear and tear of driving on it and because the car will block the sun at times.
I am considering replacing all the soil and doing the whole thing properly, but considering that it is never going to be a perfect lawn, I'm also looking at what my options are to get a result for the least amount of effort. The area has had plants and clumps of grass growing on it in the past so it is not completely dead, but it is clearly not ideal soil conditions either.
Most importantly, the grass would need to grow in clay rocky soil. It needs to be reasonably hardy and somewhat shade tolerant. Plus easy to install for an amateur like myself. A friendly guy at the council suggested Mondo grass which looked good in some respects but I read it dies with regular foot traffic so may not be good here. I've also considered the hardy grass seed mixes you can get at bunnings.
The lawn directly adjacent to the parking space is buffalo grass. I already have trouble with my buffalo grass dieing in shady areas around the back so I'm not convinced this would work here. It seems most hardier types of grass will grow higher and faster than the buffalo, which isn't ideal but may just be the price I have to pay.
If a quick-and-dirty approach fails, I can always rip it out and get a professional to replace all the soil, but for now I'm just looking for any advice anyone may have regarding the type of grass that may suit my needs?
Some photos of the ground here. (I actually posted these in a different thread 8 months ago when I was looking for advice for what to do with another part of my property that shares the same ground type).
