Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 08, 2022 10:49 am Can someone advise if I should pull up my landscaper for using H2 timber for the frames to support our external decking stairs? My Pest Control guy pointed out that H2 frames should only be used for indoors (house frames), and that because my landscaper used H2 for the deck, it may be vulnerable to termites and decay sooner than it should be. Can anyone advise if this is standard practice or did my landscaper stuff this up? Photo for reference. H2 treatment is the minimum level of preservative treatment required to protect the timber from attack by insects, including termites. H2 preservative treatments are suitable in above-ground, well-ventilated situations protected from weather and wetting. H2 should only be used inside, under cover and protected from wetting. https://www.tpaa.com.au/faq/ https://qtimber.daf.qld.gov.au/guides/h-codes-hazard-treatments-h1-h5 Re: My landscaper used H2 timber for decking frames 3Jun 08, 2022 10:44 pm yes you should, how this happens is unbelievable, H2 and H3 timber have been around for ever and how someone who does this for a job, stuffs it up is beyond me. I’ve seen this too. Re: My landscaper used H2 timber for decking frames 4Jun 08, 2022 11:59 pm The landscaper has definitely used materials not fit for purpose. H2 is only surface treated and is not fit for exposed applications. All the cuts will soak water in and rot as it's just raw timber. It will also allow termite access. H3 is pressure treated with different chemicals so the chemical is right through the timber and it prevents rot and insect infestation. Unfortunately for the landscaper the entire job will need to be pulled apart and rebuilt using framing materials that are fit for purpose. Good luck.
