Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 17, 2022 2:03 pm Hi, I built a garden bed in my backyard, and I’m now a bit worried that the timber is too close to the home. Hopefully people here can help I used treated sleepers from Bunnings, with a layer of in-ground timber protector painted on (added some pictures) The garden bed is only for succulents, so the area won’t get watered much (maybe once a month). The soil also doesn’t reach the bricks/mortar. I will be renting the home out eventually, and won’t be able to look after the timber. I’m wondering when the timber eventually breaks down, could it attract termites, and will this be a problem since it’s close to the home? Thanks heaps! Generally (and in most cases) you want consistent levels of moisture around your house envelope and you definitely don't want to be introducing more water around your footings. Termites love moisture too. As to whether its a termite risk depends on a lot of variables that may not eventuate, but watering a garden bed up against your home will most likely cause you issues down the line. DO you happen to know what type of soil (and the rating) you're on? Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig. I don't imagine we would be watering the garden bed often, they're mostly succulents I'm considering replacing the wood with something else. Your soil type would be inthe geotech report that you paid for that was commissioned prior to building. You either have it in your documents, or could obtain it from the builder. Either way, garden beds next to houses are a problem waiting to happen. Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig.
