Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 13, 2008 1:09 pm Hello,
I have a sandstone retaining wall and a concrete area beneath it. The retaining wall is quite old and when it rains it leaks a fair bit and then oozes out on to the concrete leaving a mess for the next week... I have plugged the grout which has helped but I doubt that I will ever be able to seal it completely. My latest idea is to cut a very small drain in the concrete at the base of the wall to drain off the seepage. Cutting and installing a grated 'U' channel would be crazy overkill. It would only need to be very small as we are really only dealing with very small volumes of seepage... I was thinking a shallow U section say 50mm wide and 20mm deep would do the trick. In timber, the tool to cut this would be a router - is there an equivalent for concrete ? Any other suggestions ? thanks david Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 3Oct 13, 2008 11:30 pm yeah they are easy to use. Like a giant grinder. bigger than a nine inch grinder. You will need to mark out your cut and then do a series of narrow cuts. Then break the pieces out with a jimmie bar or similar. I would be buying a spoon drain to drop in, then concrete the sides up and get it all flush and tidy. I might be able to get a pick of one in paving. I have done the above in a few nurseries over the years. Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 5Oct 14, 2008 7:06 pm get a 4 1/2 inch good quality grinder and get a diamond cup head grinding wheel. next get 2 x 20mm thick x 75 odd mm peices of dead straight timber.
place one peice hard upto the retaining wall and the other 2mm wider in width than the cup head disk.this board needs to be held by a few mates etc this gives you a straight edge to work to. run the grinder very slowly from one end to the other, make sure as you go along the boards the grinder goes to full cutting depth. doing it this way will give you and even and symmetrical finish. That may be easier to control and is a safer option if you have no experience. I will also give another mention about a good point that davinci said in his post because it is a must. WEAR GOGGLES AND EAR PROTECTION when cutting concrete otherwise your ears will be ringing for days. Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 7Oct 14, 2008 10:40 pm i was watching a bloke using a concrete saw on the road works down from us. No saftey vest, no goggles and no eye protection. He was clearly insane. Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 8Oct 15, 2008 6:12 am clearly an idiot.
If I was doing that I would be wearing both my ear plugs AND muffs with my goggles... I have done a bit of grinding work in the past & would be comfortable dong this. What I wasn't sure about was what to make the drain out of ? Make the cuts, remove the concrete & then put in a 'spoon' drain ? btw - what is a spoon drain ? cheers - have just googled spoon drain and found it on James Hardie website - min dia is 225mm which is a little big for what I need unfortunately.. Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 9Oct 15, 2008 8:05 pm Maybe something like a PVC pipe cut in half will work as a type of drain that could be put in place once the channel has been cut out. Just a thought because you could get smaller size that you require. Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 10Oct 15, 2008 11:19 pm like these

Re: cutting a drainage channel in concrete... 13Oct 16, 2008 9:41 pm they aren't that big
The same size pretty much as a 90mm PVC drain pipe.
