Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: sealing stackstone 2Oct 09, 2008 4:15 pm you need to use a penetrative stone sealer most paver suppliers will have it in stock, it can be expensive dependent on brand etc unless it is an iron based slate then it doesnt really need sealing Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: sealing stackstone 4Oct 09, 2008 8:30 pm the stone needs to be dry before sealer application other wise the sealer can turn a milky colour on the surface and this cannot be easily cleaned off if solvent based, water based can be slightly damp dependent on brand of sealer
if the stack stone looks like slate (the stuff that was used as tiles internally in the late 80's then seal it, but this is no guarantee that iron leaching will not happen (rusty coloured stain etc) if you get the rusty stain use a mild hydro. acid pressure clean all you need is a basic pressure sprayer if you are using water based sealer if it is a solvent based then you may need to thin it out to be able to spray using a basic pressure sprayer, as an example my sealer applicator sprayer is $400 + just for the reservoir and hand pump but it can spray straight solvent sealer make sure you use drop sheets for all hard surfaces that dont need sealer and yes it is very easy to seal stack stone, if you can use a weed killer then you can use stack stone sealer just make sure you apply an even coat / s not to heavy and not to light, when the surface looks evenly wet then it should be okay Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Stackstone sealer 5Oct 20, 2008 8:02 am Hi
You shouldn't use a traditional stone sealer as they are designed for a flat surface such as a polished marble tile etc. If you use that type of sealer on stackstone then you will have moisture get behind the sealer and wil end up with white patches appearing behind the sealer. There is a product from Sure Seal called Easy As 1 2 3 which is specifically designed for use on stackstone. It is a brush on product and you can apply one, two or three coats depending what type of finish you want. It costs around $25 for a 1 litre bottle and that will give you great coverage. We retail and wholesale landscaping products and we sell a lot of stackstone, and this is the best product I have found for sealing the irregular surfaces of stackstone and stone wall claddings. Re: sealing stackstone 6Oct 20, 2008 8:39 pm penetrative stone sealer is fine for stackstone weather flat , vertical or what ever, solvent sealer once dry doesnt go milky (white patchs) etc, it is non reactive when set. the only white residue you may get weather solvent (penetrative) or water based is eff. but this comes down to the adhesive and block mortar etc. or the sealer is applied to damp / wet stone.
traditional stone sealer cannot be used on marble it wont penetrate and form a surface film which is required for marble. there is no sealer on the market that has 100% penetration so no matter what sealer you use moisture can get behind it on vertical or flat surface. no sealer turns milky (white patchs) if the correct sealer is used and applied correctly. all penetrative sealers allow stone to breath. surface sealer do not.
