Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 08, 2008 8:45 pm Hi there, we are in the process of organising retaining walls, and am wondering what the most cost effective option is. Options as we see them are: Timber/concrete sleepers (proves expensive when looking at steel I Beams) Besser block retaining wall (also needs some serious form work and alot of shagging around with concrete and morter) Moss Rocks (no real preparation needed, but a bit back bracking...) Those really lovely blocks that just slot together and finished with equally lovely capping pieces (really expensive) Not affraid of hard work, just finished doing the storm water and shoveling road base around for the paving before we do the fences . We are simply running out of money Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and any contacts in the south of adelaide would be great too.... Re: what is the most cost effective retaining wall 2Oct 08, 2008 9:27 pm I'd consider how long you'll be there and how long the particular retaining wall solution may last.
I lived in a house with a horribly decayed wooden retaining wall and it was a huge pain. You have to spend a fortune fixing it up and you'll never see a cent of the expense back in resale. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: what is the most cost effective retaining wall 3Oct 08, 2008 10:28 pm Timber sleepers would be the cheapest option and treated pine sleepers wont rot and can even be painted to any colour you like or be kept as is.
Vetical supports can be either galvanised steel H type or just the same treated pine sleepers. Well if it was prepared properly with adequit drainage such as aggie pipes installed with crushed rock and possibly even some black plastic between the sleepers and the dirt it wouldnt rot. I actually have railway sleeper, hardwood and treated pine garden beds and retainer walls and 15 years on still no rot. Re: what is the most cost effective retaining wall 6Oct 09, 2008 7:35 pm Cabinfever Oh yes they will. That's exactly what my retaining wall was. Were all the cut ends properly resealed?? I reckon 99% of people don't reseal treated pine when its been cut and then whinge when it rots. Re: what is the most cost effective retaining wall 7Dec 21, 2008 7:21 pm HI Just wondering what you finally went for with your retaining walls. This is now becoming our newest consideration now we can see how much ground was built up by the builders before they started. A truckload of 1m3 and 0.5m3 B grade sand stone cost me around $700. A good Bobcat operator should cost $80-$90 per hour. You should be able to do the math. Re: what is the most cost effective retaining wall 10Jan 22, 2009 9:55 am I agree they may be cheaper in the short term, but unless you have sorted out the bits in the ground they will only last as long as they take to rot. wooden type walls can cost more in the long term. The last home I lived in didn't have a pool and when i went to sell it the agents were not happy, even telling me to put one in to sell the place. The agents weren't happy… 2 4158 Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5096 Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 5700 |
