Need help with west facing wall.

We have a windowless west facing wall (our main living area is behind the wall) on one side of our house. Ever since I've lived here - 23 years now - it has been covered by a climbing banksia rose. This works well to keep the heat off the wall in summer, because the wall cops the hot low sun from the west from early in the afternoon during the summer heat.

The problem is this rose is now becoming too difficult for us to maintain. We are both in our 50s and it is becoming too dangerous for my husband to have to keep getting on a ladder 4-5 times every spring / summer to prune it back out of the eaves. A bit more info:

1. The wall itself is about 4-5 metres high. This is because our house is on a slope meaning at that end of the house where the rose is, there is considerable space under our floor, making the wall longer. Also the gabled roof adds further to the height of the wall.

2. Banksia rose can reach a height of up to 6-8 netres so it climbs to the maximum height it can up the wall and up into the eaves.

3. This means my husband has to climb up a very tall ladder to get close to the top of the wall to prune the plant under the eaves at least 4-5 times each spring and summer.

4. Our garage is close to this wall so we cannot plant a big tree / shrub to shield the wall from the sun. If we could, this is what I would do.

We would really like to remove this plant but need to come up with a solution to shield the wall from the hot sun if we do. There are no windows, so awnings / blinds etc will look silly. Because the sun comes down low, a horizontal awning or roof coming off the wall will also be useless as the sun will simply go under it. I'm happy to try a different climbing plant which doesn't grow as tall, but it needs to be able to withstand the hot summer sun and the cold frosts of Canberra in winter.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
