Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Oct 07, 2008 1:13 pm We have a really boring galve fence in our back yard and want to build a garden bed across the length of it. We are thinking of using pine sleepers (maybe 2 high) and making the bed about 1m in width - then filling with soil and putting some nice plants in to get some colour. I am after any ideas or suggestions (or any artistic people to add something into the pic) as to how we could go about doing this and what materials to use. (The shed and slab in the pic will soon be gone - as will the clothes line)

Re: Small garden bed on back fence - help & ideas 5Oct 07, 2008 5:20 pm That fence sure is ugly. I'd be getting something that grows to about 3m, evergreen, and bushy. That way it'd totally hide the fence, but not start turning into a huge wall.
Maybe a species of evergreen magnolia ? Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Small garden bed on back fence - help & ideas 6Oct 07, 2008 6:41 pm McReidy, whatever you decide to plant, make sure you buy yourself a gardening magazine, turn to the very back where you'll find a list of mail order nurseries.
They send plants bare rooted in boxes. None of my plants, when I was establishing my garden in our 1st house, died. They all thrived. THis is far cheaper than going to your local nursery. Much nicer colour and less messy looking when they get bigger than the cabernet.
Good old Purple fountain grass (Pennisetum advena rubrum, they don't self seed) cheap and fast growing would be great. Cabin fever is right to. Get something that is nice and bushy behind though. The grasses would be a speccie adition in front though check some of my other posts in here for ideas on what to choose Re: Small garden bed on back fence - help & ideas 8Oct 11, 2008 1:57 pm have you thought of espalier's?
