The tree that is very close will also be drawing water from that entire area. What is the soil like when you dig down? Thanks I'll pour some water over it and check how long it takes to drain. The area definitely doesn't have the best drainage. Before I redid the garden with more natives we had other shrubs and trees (e.g. a medium sized acer) in that spot and they did fine.
