Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 21Aug 05, 2011 10:17 pm Hahahaha that's funny. No the builder didn't put any sand there, we have too much of it!!! Great for digging (when moist) but not good for planting. Need to add clay, organic soil zeolite, spongolite to it to get it decent for plants and turf. Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 22Aug 06, 2011 7:34 am Well as you can probably tell I've never ventured over that side but I'm genuinely surprised that you're all on sand!!!!!!!!!! So do they give everyone who builds a new house a bucket and spade with the welcome pack? Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 23Aug 06, 2011 3:04 pm Like cheerupcharlie i am surprised to see so much sand .You will be laughing at our clay soil when digging. I will be curiously watching this thread, I wont be of much help but will be learning from what you are doing.wish i was as ambitious as you are,may be after you complete all these. I also wanted to mention that i like your posts since they are always clear and complete.Keep up the good work . Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 24Aug 07, 2011 11:09 pm I did a how to on installing a wireless rain sensor. Choose the Rain Dial. Great controllers but cost a bit more. Much better scope for programming water efficient programmes. Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 25Aug 07, 2011 11:18 pm Thanks Fu, will head Towards the rain dial then. I have seen your great install thread of the wireless sensor! Would you recommend the toro? Fu, your advice is going to be hugely appreciated as I get though my landscaping journey Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 26Aug 07, 2011 11:19 pm As for sand, yes there is plenty. I guess that's why we are Sandgropers Under our house, they got bored of counting at 9m of sand. So its 9m plus. If its not sand around the west coast its limestone. Either way we have opposite soils and almost the exact same things to do to bring them round to being a good soil The only difference is the bentonite is not needed over east. Organic composts bind sand and break clays. Irritrol Better value. Toro is good to set to a custom setting though. Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 28Jan 04, 2012 1:46 pm JMatthews Hey wrexter how goes your landscaping journey Hey there, Unfortunately I haven’t got anything done on the landscaping yet as I have been very busy painting and doing other bits on the house. BUT, I have just started looking into the landscaping now as I have till March to finish off the front so this thread is about to get some life. I have been looking at irrigation so will start purchasing all the bits: Looking at: - Irritol Raindial 9 station outdoor controller - Irritor Rain sensor - Hunter MP Rotators - Irritol 250 Series Solenoids. Will start posting up some photos of what im aiming for the front Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 29Jan 04, 2012 2:12 pm Will be interested to see that ... we are still planning what to do in the back yard and half of the plants in the front garden are dying that the developer planted ... so may have to revisit that at some stage. Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 30Jan 26, 2012 7:57 pm Hi guys, I have been working on the front landscaping plan and would appreciate some feeback, especially from Garden Master Fu :p My front landscaping plans have to be submitted to the land developers by this friday and then i have about 3 months to complete the works to claim the rebate. This is what i have come up with, you can download the view the full version which has lables etc. Click HERE for PDF of Plan with lables and legends guide. Here are some plants/ideas im thinking, any guidance, advice etc would be appreciated. If anyone knows names of the plants that would be fantastic, the only one i know is agave. Feature Plant/shrub ideas Agave planting idea Medium/small tree idea Shrub to cover master bedroom window Other small plant ideas Cheers Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 32Jan 29, 2012 2:54 pm JMatthews looks good to me wrexter its what i plan to do with my place eventually. Are you planning something similar for the backyard? Thanks. The backyard is going to be a bit more complicated and require more effort as i have big plans for it. I want to put more effort into it as you spend more time in the back. For the backyard i plan on having: - Decking in the alfresco - Planter boxes - Herb garden (most likely in pots) - Timber Pagola next to alfresco to extend entertaining area - Built in BBQ and a Pizza Oven - Grassed Areas The most important this is to get the front done in the next 3 months, i can take my time with the backyard and complete at my own pace. - Trees such as a lime tree, frangipanis Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 34Jan 29, 2012 11:20 pm JMatthews Sounds really good. I look forward to seeing your progress. Are you going to be doing everything yourself? Planning on doing everything myself, will show progress here. The only things I'm not comfortable doing or cant legally do are: Paving, exposed aggregate & electrical Everythig else i will tackle myself. Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 35Jan 30, 2012 10:50 am Wow, should look great - the feature plant in the first and third pic is a Cycad - they can grow very big but look great!! Sorry can't help with much else ecept the frangipani in the last pic. Good luck with it - can't wait to see it take shape! Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 38Feb 24, 2012 1:37 am Hey JMatthews, Will be pouring the foundation for the planter/retaining this weekend. I have had a hard time trying to design it and finalise the plan as its on a sloping block (in 2 planes) but i think i am pretty happy with this final design. The green areas are obviously turf, you can see the retaining wall/planter box and there will be small plants in them. Behind the planter box there will be garden bed. between that and the house will be paving leading to back of house.. (refer plan in previous post). I will be getting about 12 cubic meters of soil removed on the weekend, then we're doing the form work and gorund compaction, then pouring the concrete monday morning. I will post up photos. The plan is as follows 1. Excavate area (done professionaly, worked out cheaper than if i did it) 2. Prepare and pour concrete slab for planter/retaining wall 3. brick up planter allowing for retic/lighting lines. 4. render planter 5. waterproof planter 6. paint planter 7. soil preparations as per Fu's reccomendations. 8. laying retic and lighting lines 9. paving 10. turf installation 11. plants/trees install and finalise retic. it wiil be a hell of a challenge to get this completed in the next 2 months as we have to in order to get the $3000 rebate. just the retic setup alone is costing me $1000 (buying from aussie suppliers, online). Re: WREXTER's LANDSCAPING JOURNEY 39Feb 24, 2012 9:20 am Wow ... this is a big project but you can do it!! Shame you have the time pressure on you but still it will make you stick to it!
