Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 21May 25, 2009 8:27 pm Looks like a Phalaenopsis orchid in the tree too They are fantastic I have a few here. the weeds are dandelions and I think the other maybe a strawberry? i am sure they are strawberries yum The growth on the tree is lichen which is a very very slow growing simple plant. They will not harm the tree and I'd leave it be. It will make the tree look really cool as it grows on it Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 22May 25, 2009 8:36 pm The lawn isn't looking too cool there but it is because the area is very shaded so that is how it will always be Don't push poo up a hill with it. Check the thread on Zoysia that is near by some where. It has excellent tips on keeping anylawn at it's best. The type you have is getting me scratching my head. Hard to tell for certain from the pics. If I could touch it or maybe we can send Donuts over to roll around on it? My first thought was kikuyu so I'll go with that. If it was in top condition, it would be easy to tell I'd go get some dichondra seeds from your nearest garden centre and chuck 'em around the shady areas. it will grow as a turf substitute in the shady spots and stop the weeds (and fruit) from growing If you use a "weed and feed" on it, make sure it is not a granular one and make sure it doesn't contain "dicamba". Neither are going to make you lawn very happy. i'd just get a weeding fork and flick out the dandelions or pour some boiling water on each one. Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 23May 25, 2009 9:51 pm Fu Manchu the weeds are dandelions and I think the other maybe a strawberry? i am sure they are strawberries yum That second weed would be buttercup, we don't get them here in Perth, but do in NZ (used to play with them when I was a kid). It would respond to a broadleaf selective very nicely, or you could have pretty yellow (weed) flowers in your yard ? Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 24May 25, 2009 9:55 pm Really? It looks so much like a strawberry? You always teach me something new Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 26May 25, 2009 10:25 pm Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 28May 25, 2009 10:31 pm Fu Manchu The lawn isn't looking too cool there but it is because the area is very shaded so that is how it will always be Don't push poo up a hill with it. Yeah there was a dead mulberry tree which was covering half the lawn so with it gone there will be much more light for the lawn. At least I'm hoping! Okay I'll throw out my liquid one and go grab the granular! Thanks so much Fu and lacebark! Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 29May 25, 2009 10:32 pm OMG I can't kill Buttercups now >.< I'll keep thinking of the duckling! I'll get back to you guys on what that grows into! BC or Strawberries! I'll take more pics once I get more work done on the garden! I'll be putting up that Staghorn! Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 30May 25, 2009 10:39 pm well you posted to go with the granular but I did post that this will also leave your lawn not cool. If you do spray this is pretty much your choice Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Note the active constituent. of "bromoxynil". That won't harm couch, buffalo, Zoysias or kike If you can't find that one, look at the "ingredients" (active constituents) and pick one with the same stuff in it I still think that killing ducks is wrong though Just flick them out with a weeding fork Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 31May 25, 2009 10:59 pm Fu Manchu well you posted to go with the granular but I did post that this will also leave your lawn not cool. I will read my liquid Feed n Weed! I'm going to keep the little patch of Buttercup/Strawberry alive and not spray that area just to see what it turns into! Re: Staghorn on Jacaranda; Weeds; Grass now with PICS 32May 29, 2009 8:21 am So I got Gardeners to do the edging. They started this morning. A bit puzzled as they are using spades! I would have thought a gardening company would have an edger! They used ride-on mowers and all sorts of contraptions when cleaning up the yard but when doing the edging they have turned up with spades! *fingers crossed* Also they are spraying round-up on onion weeds then covering with mulch. I read on one of your other threads that roundup can be quite ineffective. Hopefully it works >.<. Anyway got the Elkhorn/Staghorn (umm which is it?) up so I'll be taking more pictures and posting stuff here soon! Had two people call them Staghorn but Fu said Elkhorn or are the terms interchangable. Having a mosquito problem due to dampness. I've removed all pots and tried to dry the area out more. I've also bought a Bantix Slayer Series 4 with gas (although won't use gas first up) to try and control it. Neighbours have young kids so I am trying to fix the issue asap even though they haven't complained but must be a good neighbour! Hmmm also the water that drains from the gutters is over-flowing in the backyard. Instead of pumping it back into the sewer I am considering diverting them to a rainwater tank and using that for the outdoor toilet/laundry and garden. More PICS!
