Like I'm watering the underlay?? Or do I have to wait until the turf is laid?? (to help with clay breakup too) My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 103Jul 26, 2011 7:57 am Lex, I would just use powerfeed, as it is a clay breaker and soil conditioner. Seasol is more a plant stimulant primarily, but does have soil conditioning benefits too. Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 104Jul 26, 2011 2:51 pm Thanks, BK But, does it make sense to spray it on bare soil? Or do I wait until the turf is laid and then spray the turf?? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 105Jul 26, 2011 8:16 pm The clay breaking effects of powerfeed will not be effective with just one treatment. On going use certainly will though and do it faster than Dolomite of lime or Gypsum. All the organic acids from the certified organic composts will as well. You can apply them prior to laying but the greatest benefits are when it is applied straight after laying. Over all neither does any harm that's for sure. Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 106Jul 26, 2011 10:11 pm Turf being laid tomorrow! *excited clap* I bought some of that King Kelp (5L) from gardeners direct, their blurb reckons its better than Seasol cos its cold pressed and not heated. I dont know about all that, but it is certified organic etc and it was easy to add to my GD order! Have you used it Fu? Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 107Jul 27, 2011 8:11 am Thanks, Fu ! HB, same here BTW Fu, I noticed an area where He spread the turf underlay super thinly (about 15mm) on top of some "hard core" clay (one of those orange deep seated clays). It's not possible to add more of underlay to this area because of other reasons (too complcated to mention). So, my question is - what chances of survival does my turf have once laid over that slim layer of underlay??? Will the roots ever be able to break into that orange clay? and My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 109Jul 28, 2011 8:29 am jzell67 Ive been quoted $5.50 per m2 for Empire Zoysia? Is this pretty much standard? I thought it was more than that, around the $10 mark? Thats pretty cheap - generally its twice that price. If it is the real deal, jump on it!! Possibly, or they are trying to move stock over the winter which I'm guessing might be a slow period? Who knows? I say enjoy your bargain! Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 112Aug 07, 2011 10:29 pm If you have done your soil prep to a T then you will have confidence that its going to come up a treat What a price! Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 113Aug 07, 2011 11:29 pm Does anyone know if you can prep your soil for turf and then just turf in sections? Or should we wait until we can afford to do all of it at once? I'm just worried that we do all the soil prep work and then can only afford a small section of turf. This would mean weeds etc... in the other sections? Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 114Aug 07, 2011 11:55 pm Hey great point you make. If anything it really highlights how unimportant the plant is. If you do the soil prep, then go light on buying the turf, you can cut it up into smaller sections and have a full grown lawn by Christmas nearly After all, that's how ever lawn used to be done. Yeah a few weeds show up but weeds are not anything to be bothered about. meh, the lawn will grow and then you can kill the weeds off later Then top dress it all with a good compost in a year or so and it will be as good as any other done the homeone way (and the way of some awesome peeps in turf ) Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 115Aug 08, 2011 10:16 am Thanks so much for answering Fu! There's hope for some lawn now. We've spent plenty of money on building the house that it was looking like we wouldn't be able to start the landscaping till next year. But if we can do it this way, its a HUGE start in the right direction. I'll have to work out some costs of the soil prep now. Do you think if we have an area (I havn't measured yet) around 70 m2 that 10m2 would be enough to start spreading? That's just over 10%. It's going to look ridiculous for a while but I don't care, so long as something is happening. Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 116Aug 08, 2011 12:26 pm How much Bentonite should we be using? There is no 'coverage' amount given for it? I did the spongolite and zeolite last week... Hoping to add some bentonite over this week before the lawn goes in Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 117Aug 08, 2011 2:03 pm I added like 75kg to 60m2 deeps. I think its like one of those things where you cant go wrong by adding too much. I think ~0.5 - 2kg/m2 is about the going rate, I aimed for about 1kg / m2. I got my Bentonite from Bio John (Camden St in Belmont) and I think it was like $15/25kg bag - its a horse feed supplement called Trufeed. Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 118Aug 08, 2011 8:14 pm That's the stuff, pretty sure that is posted in the lawn threads a few times with pictures. 2-5kg per every few square metres is advisable. Make sure it is turned thoroughly through the soil at those rates. For applying to existing beds and lawns, far lighter amounts are applied over many years. Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 119Aug 13, 2011 8:28 pm So went looking for Bentonite but all I could find was attapulgite. Doing some research here, it seems like it's a good alternative. What is the real difference between the two? Is Bentonite alot better or is it all the same? Re: Fu Manchu's Guide to Laying Turf & More 120Aug 14, 2011 12:21 am Yeah Attapulgite is just as beneficial pretty much. The clays have slightly different structures and the Bentonite swells a little more than Attapulgite. Both are soil amendments. Bentonite you will get from an agricultural outlet for Horse/cattle feeds, etc like Landmark, Mirco Bros, Elders etc. Zeolite from pool shops or hardware as well as agricultural outlets. I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 2733 Hey There. No problems re jumping in. My original question was "should I have waterproofed" the concrete slab before putting batons down. We have been told we should… 7 4973 As above, you will need to trim your sheet to land on the joist, also make sure you are running your length at right angles to the joists 2 1880 |
