Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Dec 09, 2009 3:30 pm Hi all! We've just gotten a 5m x 5m merbau deck built. I purchased Integrain Reviva to clean it, that went well. Then I purchased the Sikkens Cetol HLS (Dark Oak) to stain it with, and then, stupidly, stained the whole deck. We learn from our mistakes though, and I now know that I should have gotten a few merbau offcuts (our carpenter didn't leave any at the site) and run through the intended process with them to see what they looked like first. Annnnyhow... stupid me aside. We've now got a deck that's a little bit darker and showing through a bit more reddy tint than we've really like. I've stopped at one coat of the Sikkens thinking that 2 can only make it worse. What are my options here? If I applied a lighter Cetol HLS stain as the second coat would it balance it out somewhat? Should I give it a clean with the Reviva again and then try a lighter stain? Obviously there's the complete undo option of hiring a flat bottom sander and sanding the whole lot back, but I'd prefer to not go down that route if possible. Would appreciate some advise from the many experts on here. I only even knew about some of these products thanks to them. Cheers, al fresco Re: Not happy with Sikkens Deck Stain - what can we do? 2Dec 09, 2009 3:40 pm If it's of any help I've use Sikkens HLS (Pine) on redgum planters (Sikkens don't seem to have a "natural" color)...it has a relatively neutral impact on color...i.e. the redgum looks like redgum should. So if you paint over with that it shouldn't get darker... On the flip side it's a very good product and traffics well. The boardwalk I did a year ago (it's in my backyard thread) still looks the same after a year...that's with lot's of kid traffic and landscaping works around it. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Not happy with Sikkens Deck Stain - what can we do? 3Dec 10, 2009 2:12 pm Thanks for the reply, to_do_list (that's funny, I've got one of them too - seems to grow more than it shrinks though). So do you think if I went with the pine HLS or something similarly light, it would actually lighten the deck with the Dark Oak stain already on it? I'm thinking of either trying that, or an oil of some sort (even though I've read on here about oils not really sticking around for long). Cheers, al fresco To do lists...I have a book of them...no literally a book.... The HLS Pine won't lighten the color...but it shouldn't make it darker...which is what another coat of the dark oak would do...Pine is the closest you get to neutral. A real pain with Sikkens (apart from the price... ) is that the labelling for colors is crappola...all the tins look the same except for a small label....so look carefully. I accidentally bought a tin of the oak when I wanted the pine - fortunately I got a refund. There usually is a sample of the stain hanging nearby. I'd forget the oils...I tried various brands of oils over the past 10 years on redgum planters, seats, edging etc...the best success I've had is with the Sikkens product although I think. Our resident expert Dukekamaya also recommends it... viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8763&p=366964#p366964 along with an Intergrain product....however the Intergrain is I think water based and having started with the oil based Sikkens you'll have to stick with oil based. Any decking experts out there please feel free to correct me as I'm working off my experience not a deep knowledge of oiling and decking... Edit: Oh and I believe you need three coats of the HLS...unless you start off with the Cetol Deck...anyway instructions are on the tin. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Not happy with Sikkens Deck Stain - what can we do? 5Dec 10, 2009 2:47 pm Unfortunately there is not much you can do now, if you want to change the colour (make it lighter), you have to sand it back and start again. The best Sikkens product to use on a deck is 3 coats of Cetol Deck, this has no real colour in it. The finished result is the same as the wood looks when it’s wet. The Cetol HLS is fine to use but seems to have a yellowish tinge to it, more so that the Cetol Deck. If you have any other questions about any sort of coatings, let me know. Sikkens Cetol Deck can go straight on pine or over a base coat of HLS on hardwood. 077 HLS and 078 Deck are both the natural finishs bearing in mind that all outdoor finishs have a pigment - this is what provides UV protection As far as the stained deck, as you said you should have sampled it first. Stains soak into the surface of timber and would need to be sanded off if to be removed completely. Hi, planning on using the attached stone pieces in my bathroom.
