Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 13, 2018 5:09 pm Hi, I have a basic timber paling fence round my property ~ 1.8m high. The neighbours on the west have a smaller house with a larger back yard. They frequently entertain on their back deck, adjacent to our kitchen/living area. Noise from the neighbours can be heard in our kitchen and living room as we have a weatherboard house with no insulation. It also affects use of the deck area, with just the fence for blocking the noise. I am looking at options to dampen this noise - I believe the thin timber fence offers little in the way of acoustic dampening. Replacing with a new modular acoustic fence ~2.2m high means $5k in materials plus install plus removal of old fence. I have looked at SlimWall for this. Alternatively could the existing fence be strengthened and raised in height? Foilboard panels from Bunnings would offer 25mm of EPS (Polystyrene) insulation which could be fitted into the fence itself cavities between the posts/noggins. This is $1k in materials, I could install myself. Over the foilboard I could fit treated chipboard sheets and paint them the same colour as the fence for not much more. I could raise the height with fence extension for not much extra and cut foilboard to do the same thing. But does EPS foilboard offer much in the way of acoustic dampening? From some google searching there is not much online to help. Is there another option I should consider? I want to remain conscious of cost because the neighbours are renters and may not be around forever, however they have been here for two years and seem very settled! The new ones are much quieter. One of the things I did that may help you was to install 'retrofit double glazing' - acrylic window inserts that create an air pocket between the glass and the acrylic. These are more designed for heat retention however they do offer acoustic properties as well; the optimum gap is 10cm though I ended up with a smaller 5cm gap on the recommendation of the installer - bigger gaps may look a bit like plane windows when finished. I used EcoGlaze and the total bill was $1,500 for three widows; included the check-measure, custom sized inserts constructed and then fitted to the frame. This has definitely dampened noise transfer from next door to the point that simple conversations are no longer heard. If you were skilled enough you could make them yourself, a 1m squared piece of 6mm acrylic sheeting goes for about $140. Anyway this may help you enjoy a quieter home inside, but I still don't have any answers to the fence issue. It looks like your 'busy' area would look out on it...depending on what size windows you have of course. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage.
