Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 27, 2017 2:41 am Hi, Would really love some help and advice please, we are stuck I have researched as much as I could and Im still stuck. We are hoping to finally lay some Palmetto Buffalo turf this coming weekend (1st April) on our block for our new build home and I'm freaking out that its getting too late in autumn and not sure if theres extra things we could do to help it take properly. I know new turf needs a lot of water but at this time of year my predominate concern is potential over watering if there is excessive rainfall after we lay it which there is some forecast, would it help if we top dressed it with sand or is there anything we could do to make sure the roots will still go deep enough ect and we lessen the risks associated with over watering due to excessive rainfalls? Our block/yard is a mixture of soil we are H1/P class and seem to have a bit of everything clay, rock and some normal. Also our landscaper has brought in a fair bit of fill which had a lot of broken glass, gravel, wood chip and just rubbish (cans, broken tiles, bricks ect) so have spent weeks digging over the yard to get all the rubbish up so theres no rubbish just under the surface. We have been killing all the weeds/random grasses popping up and today started digging and levelling everything out a bit more and put down some clay breaker. We are also bringing in two truckloads of proper topsoil over the next couple of days, is sandy loam the best to choose? Just as turf is such a big investment we really want to do it right and can only afford to do it once so any advice would be very welcome we are trying to do as much prep as we can afford and have the time for but are novices at everything so still have a lot to learn. I know all the basics on how to lay it out and roll it ect just the finer details and specifics to our situation I'm worried about To sum up my main questions/concerns lol: What is the best type of topsoil to order for our situation? Im pretty sure its sandy loam but not 100% certain. Should we be concerned about excessive rainfall during autumn on newly laid turf or am I stressing over nothing? Should we top dress with some sand after laying, if so at what point? I have no idea if this is really recommended or not. Thank you in advance so much I am just feeling so lost! Re: Laying Turf in Autumn Overwatering from Rainfall?? 2Mar 27, 2017 6:57 am A well draining sandy loam or as the Landcaping supplies describe 80/20 turf underlay is the recommended top soil for turf. The turf won't mind the rain, and the slightly wetter month will actually make it easier for the turf to survive. Don't fuss about the rain, but also don't extra water unless you see the turf looking thirsty. Also, don't top dress. I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 7542 Hey There. No problems re jumping in. My original question was "should I have waterproofed" the concrete slab before putting batons down. We have been told we should… 7 12165 As above, you will need to trim your sheet to land on the joist, also make sure you are running your length at right angles to the joists 2 7757 |
