Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Apr 07, 2020 2:17 pm I have an old Victorian era single fronted Hawthorn brick home. Out the front, the bricks are in pretty ordinary condition. I think a couple of owners before us must have rendered the house...and then someone has sandblasted off the render. So many of the bricks have little pock marks on them. The house still looks nice, but when you look closely, the bricks are very rough. Anyway, the previous owner also had a go fixing some of the mortar...and has done a pretty rank job. Some spots with dark grey mortar just look bad. Has anyone had a go tuckpointing their home? I'm talking the traditional method, getting the mortar to match the brick colour and then the straight white small lines to make it all look even. I know it's a very slow process and pretty pricey to get done...but if it's possible, I'd be keen to have a crack at it. I don't really mind if it takes me months to finish the front...a good solid project! But if it's way too hard, I'll probably leave it...don't want to ruin my home! Just by way of background, I am reasonably handy. Have built a smallish brick wall at home in the backyard and also built fencing with blue board and render. So I'm not a complete novice! Re: DIY Tuckpointing 3Apr 09, 2020 10:31 am I worked on a restoration site once and watched the guys doing tuckpointing. I'm a chippy and I'm pretty handy on the tools (can lay the odd brick and do a bit of hardwall plaster) but I wouldn't have a go at doing tuckpointing on my own. It looks to be an incredibly specialised trade and I can imagine the difference between a professional job and a DIY Job looking world's apart. Probably right! I was thinking of trying on a small patch of bricks around the side of the house and seeing how that goes. Will probably give me a reality check! Assuming the structure of your cabinetry is good then I would DIY everything as follows: - replace your counter tops entirely, - replace all drawer runners with soft close… 1 4782 Re my second point – yes exactly. And often it may take additional time if the manufacturer recommends no more than X meters… 3 5642 |
