My neighbour recently underpinned his external walls, by digging out in sections and pouring concrete under the existing footings. I have heard of injection methods, but these can't be done as DIY and involve big dollars. I expect to get an engineer to to the design, but I would like to know what available methods are out there suitable for DIY, before I engage an engineer. Re: Underpinning an internal wall, DIY solutions 2Mar 21, 2020 3:33 pm Is it a cracked brick wall? Is it loadbearing? might be easier to demolish and rebuild in timber, otherwise rip up floor to access ground and mass concrete underpin, none of it easy and hard work by yourself Re: Underpinning an internal wall, DIY solutions 3Mar 21, 2020 5:14 pm Thanks for the input. The wall is not defective, but I am considering an attic which will put more demand on the footings. So I am wondering what options for an OB to increase the footings size. I will know final word, when I take on an engineer to do the spec but I am wondering what others have done as OBs. So you mean "rip up the floor".. something like cut slots in the floor and pour concrete under the existing footing then, or completely remove the floor first... do you know of an example that has been done.? Re: Underpinning an internal wall, DIY solutions 4Mar 25, 2020 7:02 am if it’s only an attic you probably won’t need to underpin, especially if it is masonry and in good condition as the footing has proven to be adequate. This is especially true if you can reduce load through removal of roof tiles and using colorbond and using lightweight construction. I do mean enough space in the floor to dig the holes, so normally as least a manhole size hole, but again it probably won’t be necessary. In the end, two pieces of treated timber (20mm thick) were bolted onto the joists and planed when there was too much sticking out. Passed inspection. 13 7723 I would find out how deep your clay base is and depending on the depth install a cut off drain which is more than a normal agi drain.
