Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Sep 23, 2008 1:11 pm We have the timber structure already up (before we bought) and there is wisteria growing up 2 of the posts and around some of the batten thingies.
I've looked at alsonite stuff (not that brand exactly) from bunnings and have worked out exactly how much i need, allowing for overlap etc. Now I'm just wondering, how exactly do I attach it to the battens? With bolts I presume, but if anyone knows a website with some diagrams (I'm a visual learner) it would be really appreciated. And what tools will I need? I've used all my dad's tools all my life so am now getting frustrated everytime we don't have something like a chisel! (bought one the other day) Also I'm planning on sliding the alsonite stuff under the wisteria branches that are on the battens currently, but I might have to cut out big notches where the actual trunks are. Does anyone have any better suggestions for this? Thanks in advance! Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 2Sep 23, 2008 6:05 pm There are special screws for laserlite/polycarbonate roofing called 'One-Shot'
They are the best to use. Spend a few dollars extra on the roofing and get one like the 'Laserlite Apollo' - it lets in light but keeps out heat. The cheaper ones like 'Laserlite 2000' can get fairly hot underneath. Just check the battens are the correct minimum size for the roofing - 70mmx35mm. They should be sitting on top of, and running perpendicular to the rafters which will be 140mmx45mm or 190mmx45mm or something like that. http://www.laserlite.com.au/residential/fixings/acc_oneshot.asp Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 4Sep 24, 2008 8:18 pm You will also need to check the pitch of the rafters ( the angle at which they slope down)
Corrugated (Roma) profile needs 5' minimum whilst Trimdeck (Greca) type can be 1' The other roof in the pic is the Trimdeck/Greca type. Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 5Sep 27, 2008 11:12 am You might also need to check with Council regarding approval. Here in SA no approval is required for an open pergola, however if it is covered you need approval for anything with a footprint over 10 or 12 square metres (can't remember which and depends on council as well). Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 6Oct 06, 2008 1:51 pm Make sure you check the top of the timber and all the joints. Make sure the timber hasn't started rotting before you add the roof. Attaching gutters, downpipes, and a soakwell for all the rainwater to go to. Just a thought. Pat. Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 8Oct 18, 2008 11:22 pm Duke, those oneshots are great to use
What is the laserlight polycarbonate that has the pearl effect to it. that cuts the heat dramatically. Is that the one you mean? you can get beige laserlight or beige with a metalic pearl touch to it and that is so much cooler underneath. I wouldn't suggest the alsonite. Once it ages a little you will know why the Duke has suggested otherwise. Always go for polycarbonate. Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 9Oct 19, 2008 9:10 pm The Laserlite 'Apollo' range is the pick. The Laserlite 2000 lets in heat as well as light whilst the top of the range (can't remember the name) blocks out too much light. Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 10Feb 21, 2009 9:07 pm okay... by cantilevering you will get you out from the wall an even greater distance.
(The self editing on the forum didn't like the first part of that word ) Re: how do I attach a roof to my pergola? 11Feb 22, 2009 8:15 am Have you put any thought around how you will marry the roof cladding to the existing house roof??
From looking at the photos it appears the rafters are hard up against the under side of the existing gutter. When you put your batterns on then your roof sheets you will raise the finished height of your pergola and this will be fouled by the existing house gutter I think. You will probably need to remove the gutter and bring the ends of the pergola roof sheets flush with the house facia. Depending on the direction the bad rain and weather comes from you will probably need to consider some flashing to prevent rain being driven up over the ends of the sheets and into the area below.....and onto the bbq If you take care removing the old gutter you can then re use it on the pergola. Pat has already suggested guttering and I agree, you really need to be planing that in. I like all the suggestions about lazer light stuff my friend has it and swears by the stuff. Not sure what brand he went with though. As far as attaching the batterns you can go nails driven in, in a dovetail fashion or screws I prefer the later. Which ever way you go make sure they are galvanised. As for tools you can't go past a good quality battery drill, don't skimp on this one it will be your best friend. Make sure it has two batteries. I got a Bosch 18v unit from the professional range for christmas and I love it. Next time you are a bunnings go to the book section and check out a book called "Decks & Pergolas" by Allan Staines I reckon it will answer a fair few of your questions. If you are a tight a#se like me you will just stand there and read it in the shop but you might want to buy it as a handy future reference. There are other books in the series on building and they are very good. PS The Wisteria is sending shivers up my spine.....keep a weather eye on that beast cos if it gets away from you, you will have it popping out of every corner/crevis/nook/cranny of your property......and belive me it is hard to kill. 4 9060 Old Home Restoration / Renovation Cheers mate!
