Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 06, 2019 11:24 am Hi everyone, I'm fairly new to DIY stuff and am looking to sort out the drainage at the front of my house. The first photo shows one drain - the plastic box has a deep layer of dirt in it, about 10cm. I guess this is a combination of dirt and rotted leaves from a fair few years, and I should remove it. Good call? For the second and third photos, this is at the side of the house, and I'm sure it's not in a condition to do an efficient job. Any tips for sorting it out would be much appreciated . A silt pit has a lower pipe that puts water in and a higher pipe that drains water out. The purpose of the pit is to prevent silt from entering the main stormwater system and clogging drains and creeks etc downstream. The bottom pipe is buried, you need to clean out the pit. I can't tell what is going on in the other photos but I can see that the weep holes are level with the concrete path which isn't good unless the area is under cover. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: Sorting out Drainage 3Aug 06, 2019 1:06 pm Thanks for the info. I'll get that pit cleaned out. It'll be interesting to see if there's any tips for the second one. I'm thinking perhaps installing a silt pit there to go with the pipe? Obviously would need careful planning before doing that. You might need a smoke test to find out. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper. My pits only have one pipe i them and it appears to me they are to catch flood water from the yard then separate the silt. The rear two definately do not have the required 1 in 100 fall, they are sloping to the rear of the property and collect water. Front ones are maily dry and again only have one pipe for extraction. All pits are belwo where the paths, garden beds and lawn, needs to be as the whole area needs raising. Not getting any answers from the builder as to where they run, are connected to. Can these be removed and a riser put in above ground level? Re: Sorting out Drainage 6Sep 30, 2020 2:51 pm A silt pit's purpose is to trap silt before the water connects to the stormwater system, it is a regulatory requirement. You should ask a qualified drainer to attend on site and discuss with him. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. I was mostly interested in knowing if a spoon drain requires a specific slope, but I appreciate the extra information. 4 3918 because its not being managed properly.
