Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 May 19, 2019 6:20 pm Hi, I have a 1973 brick veneer home in WA which has a severe crumbling problem on the single brick sections - particularly the single brick walls of the garage. The home is a split face external brick with Jarrah framed interior. A garden bed is opposite pictured wall- and retic has already been moved so it does not spray wall and is drippers directly into plants. What's the method to stop continued crumbling and then what can I do to repair lost mortar? I am pretty handy and have access to heaps of different building tools. Thank you! I think by moving the source of water you've done what you need to stop the crumbling of the bricks (once the moisture level drops), but if you want to go further, you could apply a clear waterproof sealer to both sides after brushing any loose material away and fixing the mortar. To fix the mortar, you can scrap it out a centimetre or so and then re-point with fresh mortar. There are plenty of websites and YouTube videos that will show you the process. Re: Crumbling brick wall 3May 19, 2019 10:10 pm Hi, would you have any suggestions of a brick sealer to buy that you have used? Most products I've bought from Bunnings seem to be 'diy' strength and fail not long after I buy it. Is there a professional product you use? Thank you Re: Crumbling brick wall 4May 20, 2019 8:10 am geroranger Hi, would you have any suggestions of a brick sealer to buy that you have used? Thank you I don’t have a product to recommend, but you could search the Internet for "professional grade masonry sealer" or speak to a local masonry specialist. can’t tell from the photo, a tie down rod will be 12mm, is it a steel beam? he should be able to work it out 1 4461 Thank you alexp79 and gommeqld for your advice, that's very helpful, thanks 3 7921 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
