Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 15, 2018 1:33 pm Hi all I am close to finishing a deck that I've been building for some time now. I built the frame using steel and the plan was to lay composite boards, but I really need it done before Christmas and I've almost ran out of money. I've done a bit of searching on what else I could lay, and I've decided on treated pine sleepers. I've shown pics to the wife and she approves! The question I need help with is how I should fix the sleepers to the steel. I also built some retaining walls using steel framing and sleepers, and I mostly used bolts, but I'd prefer not to go that route in this situation. I'm open to using the screws with the hex head, so long as a know that I'll be able to screw them all the way in so that the head is just below the surface, but I'm thinking that there would have to be another way. I'm super keen to hear what you all think. This is all I need to do to get it all done and am ready to go; I just need to know the answer to this issue. Thanks Dean Re: Need advice - almost finished my deck! 2Dec 15, 2018 2:13 pm Dean, could you provide a picture or two as I'm not understanding how you would substitute sleepers for decking boards - wouldn't they be awfully thick and thus raise the height of the deck above what was originally intended? Need advice - almost finished my deck! 5Dec 15, 2018 4:08 pm OK, for what it’s worth, my decking boards are attached to my steel frame using self-tapping screws, but with square driver holes. I suggest that longer self-tapping screws will work for you too.
