Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Jul 30, 2018 9:33 am I moved to my new townhouse 2 years ago, it was brand new. Since we moved in the floors upstairs were creaking/squeaking, after long discussions with the builder they fixed the noises from the ceiling (from ground floor ripping the plaster and fixing the noises). However, the noises are back in a few places. I have a feeling that the builder is only trying to stop the noises without fixing the problem. I mentioned the problem to the builder and he's not willing to fix it, I know I need to pressure him, however, I know we will try to fix it via ceiling again. I was wondering if a structural engineer inspection would be helpful to pinpoint the issue, so I have the facts to prove to the builder he needs to fix it properly. Any help or suggestion is appreciated. Thanks Re: Squeaking Floor - subfloor issues? 4Jul 30, 2018 8:54 pm I'm sorry to say, but unless the boards are fixed to a slab or timber sheeting, wooden floors will make sounds, especially if they have been tightly fitted against one another. Furthermore, as timber is a natural material, it’s dimensions will change over time, and in varying temperature and humidity conditions, so even if it is fixed now, it is likely it will happen again in the future. Re: Squeaking Floor - subfloor issues? 5Jul 30, 2018 9:44 pm It’s important to find out how the floorboards are installed. With hardwood, it’s important to use glue and secret nail. Thanks for the reply. The boards are attached to timber sheeting (plywood or yellow tongue). Sorry, when I said “the floor is solid” I meant the floor is strong. The noises are not coming from the boards, but from the floor joists, or beam, or something in that area. Would also like an opinion from anyone that has used xcem over hebel for floors. Thanks 1 14225 Jimbo73 I would use heaps of adhesive on each sheet and screw rather than nail. use as many as you like cheers Simeon 1 4064 XCEM Alpha flooring seems to relatively new and I could not found any reviews. Have you or someone you know have used it and would recommend over other subfloor options?… 2 7588 |
