plane or sand veranda posts and roof for varnishing?

Hi there,

we're thinking about prepping these treated cypress posts (100mm x 100m x 3m) and varnishing them. they're pretty rough. should I be planing them or sanding them with a belt sander before applying the varnish? we will be adding thermoclear polycarbonate sheeting for the roof.

If we wanted to get fancy and do it to the pergola roof structure too, use the same approach?

we may just paint them grey if it looks like too much work (i.e. more than 5 days to prep/stand/varnish).

thanks

here's a few pics of the posts and roof

I wouldn't plane or sand them, but just oil them with something that will protect the colour but not be shiny.
