Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Dec 08, 2016 3:08 pm Hi all, I've noticed that in two or three different areas that the Mortar between the brick work of my house is starting to decay. The main two locations are out the front of the house on the bottom layers of the brick work. They aren't cracks just the mortar is falling apart and turning into sand, I've made some calls to brick layers asking them about re pointing and some of them have said if you had a pool it could be the reason for this but they were unsure. It could also be that they have mixed to much sand into the mortar it is wrecking my brain but when it rains it tends to fall apart quicker. A Concreter said that it seems it Is getting weather affected and told me to put a clear slicon product over it so it won't get wet or affected by weather. I have bought a product from bunnings called "mortafil" should I just use that ?? Any help or ideas would Be great just to add it's only in certain areas as I can get my car keys out and can't push through the rest of the house. Re: Decaying brick mortar 2Dec 13, 2016 12:57 pm You haven't said how old the house is. Many new houses now have a "Performance Based Solution" aka Alternative Solution in the contract that allows the brickies to use a mortar mix that has a far higher sand content. This considerably reduces any former allowance for error and there has already been posted concerns on H1 about poor mortar quality in sections of the brickwork. 3in1 Supadiverta.
