Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 10, 2008 3:19 pm Hi all,
We are having our front windows and front door stained a natural jarrah colour to match the timber look garage door. My builder recently tried to persuade me not to do it, due to the high maintenance. What's worse is that the front faces west. We have a verandah over the front door and one window, but it's not very deep. At this stage I am loath to change my facade colours which I think I'm going to be really happy with. So my question is - what sort of maintenance will we have to do to the windows and door? We are not natural DIYers but are happy to have a go if it's cheaper than getting someone in every year. Can someone give me a step by step guide for a novice? many thanks Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 2Aug 10, 2008 7:30 pm I'm going to be no help whatsoever by saying....THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T GET TIMBER!!!! I think the whole thing is a pain in the a**e unless you're handy.
I know some of the displays get their wood restained between every three and six months. If you decide to get someone in, maybe make it a regular thing and get a good price? Not helpful am I? I wish I knew this when I was doing my colours, would have stayed away! But I just can't bear to go through all that again! I figure if we REALLY get sick of the maintenance we can paint them a different colour in a few years. At least we will start off with something nice! If anyone has a step-by-step novice DIY guide would still love to know it Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 4Aug 10, 2008 8:20 pm Yeah , I won't be much help either - we've got timber windows at the front but we're having them painted, as it's much easier to maintain (and needs less frequent maintenace!) I do love the look of the stained windows, but looking at some of the displays that weren't that old, a lot of the stain had started to peel which put me off it.
Having said that, if it's what you really love, maybe you'll just have to be prepared to do the maintenance! Have already told DH I am not choosing all over again thank you!
Paula - how have your windows gone so far, you've been in there a few months now? Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 7Aug 10, 2008 9:00 pm They are OK now, not sure when they were last done.
The house is 18 months old. We have been here for nearly 3 months and they certainly dont need redoing yet. Summer might bring a different result though. Paula Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 8Aug 10, 2008 9:02 pm Well, that is good to hear! What way do they face please ?
Also, do you have real timber garage? Ours will be metal but with timber look. (I wish they made windows in the same material!) Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 14Aug 10, 2008 9:20 pm yep I just knew someone that must have had a garden bed up too close
to the house and the water was constantly spraying onto his timber windows, which isnt helpful probably wont be your case but yep. that was in WA btw we can have sprinklers/retic etc anyhow youll be fine Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 16Aug 10, 2008 9:39 pm mmm interesting, we have aluminium window frames, which i really don't like, prefer timber...but our front door frame and sidelight etc are timber and well worn outside - looks like the old owners did NO maintenance
Seeing as we already have them though i'll just sand and oil them with decking oil, every 3 or so months i imagine Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 17Aug 11, 2008 8:41 am donuts Well, that is good to hear! What way do they face please ? Also, do you have real timber garage? Ours will be metal but with timber look. (I wish they made windows in the same material!) I have them all around the house!!! But the front ones and garage face north. You can get timber look windows called UVPC - very good product, this is just one company that do them. http://www.win-tech.com.au/index.php?p=1_1 Paula Re: Maintenance of timber windows and front door 19Aug 11, 2008 12:50 pm They were (well three different companies) at the Home Ideas Show, and they wernt that much more expensive from memory -
