Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 21, 2016 4:29 pm Hi All, Long time visitor of the forums and now first time posting - hoping some of you seasoned DIY'ers can give me some advice on a problem developing under the carpet of our home. Picture below shows how a floorboard beneath the carpet has started to collapse. I don't have any access to underneath the house to get a visual on what may be causing this. I am also expecting that other floorboards may develop this same problem, as the house is 100 yr old workers cottage style that we've purchased approx 6months ago. Have any of you seen something like this before? Any ideas on the possible cause, resolution, and cost? I appreciate the carpet will need to be pulled up for a more thorough investigation however before I do this I wanted to check on the general opinion here; as I won't be able to put the carpet back down without professional assistance. Thanks in advance! nxh Re: Collapsing floorboards under carpet 2Aug 21, 2016 4:30 pm Apologies the image didn't work - here's a link: http://imgur.com/a/b6l1Y Re: Collapsing floorboards under carpet 3Aug 22, 2016 9:28 pm If it just the one board I would suspect termites. Termites are weird creatures, just seem to eat one board in a floor, fixed many of them. If it was dampness it would probably be over a wider area. Re: Collapsing floorboards under carpet 4Aug 23, 2016 11:20 am Appreciate your reply OldChippy! Has anyone else seen something similar? Is it possible that the board had been weekend by previous termite damage perhaps many years ago, rather than recently live termites? The pest inspection we had before said "No active termites or previous termite damage or workings were found at the time of inspection." however they also go on to note "Access should be gained to the subfloor to allow a complete inspection of the property." Thanks! Yes they could have used the board as a weekender, as a getaway from their weekday lodgings.
